Mario is a male given name and the Italian and Spanish variants of the Latin name Marius .
origin
The name Mario is derived either from the Roman god of war Mars or comes from the Latin mas , maris , which means "male"; erroneously he is also interpreted as the male form of the Hebrew name Maria .
Name day and name saint
Name day is January 19th . Marius , the bishop of Avenches and Lausanne , is regarded as the name saint . He was born around 530/531 in the Diocese of Autun ( Burgundy , Eastern France ). In 574 he became the third bishop of Avenches, which is northwest of Friborg in the Üechtland ( Switzerland ), and in 590 he moved the bishopric to Lausanne. Imbued with Roman culture, he saw the empire as the universal monarchy for all time. He also worked as a goldsmith and made church utensils. He died on December 31, 594 in Lausanne and was buried there. Originally dedicated to St. Thyrsius consecrated church was later named after him, his cult in 1605 confirmed by the Catholic Church .
