Saetti was on the 13th of 20 laps with his 1.5-liter Maserati in third place in his class when the leaders Gaspare Bona and Gastone Brilli-Peri tried to lap him. The Italian steered towards the side of the road, but lost control of his vehicle, hit a wall, rolled over and landed in a moat. Saetti sustained such serious injuries that he was almost dead on the spot. The Circuito del Savio race was finished, but never held again.
