Pietro Ghersi

Pietro Ghersi (* 1899 in Genoa ; † August 1, 1972 ibid) was an Italian automobile and motorcycle racing driver .

Career

Pietro Ghersi won in 1924 on a 500 cc - Moto-Guzzi the Circuito-del-Lario -race on Lake Como . In 1925 he was on Norton at the IV. Grand Prix of Nations on the Circuito di Milano behind Mario Revelli di Beaumont Vice-European Champion in the 500 cc class. In the same year he won the Italian road championship in the 350cc category on AJS . In 1928, the Italian won the German Grand Prix on the Nürburgring in the 350 class on Norton .

Together with his brother Mario and Luigi Arcangeli , Pietro Ghersi started in 1926, 1929 and 1930 on Moto Guzzi at the Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man , which was then considered the most difficult motorcycle race in the world. In 1926 he turned the fastest race lap in the 250 cc race ( Lightweight TT ) and came in second behind the Irish Paddy Johnston . After the race, but was due to the use of an undeclared type of spark plug disqualified . In 1929 the Italian led the 250cc race, but had to retire early because of an engine failure . In 1930 he fell while training on the Goosenack and was unable to compete in the race.

From 1927 Pietro Ghersi competed in both automobile and motorcycle races. In 1929 he finished fifth in the Mille Miglia on OM . In 1930 Ghersi won with Attilio Marinoni on Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS , the Spa 24 Hours and, together with Franco Cortese fourth at the Mille Miglia . In March 1933, the Italians in Genoa founded his own racing team, a 2.3-liter Bugatti Type 35 , a 1.1-liter Maserati - seater and a 2.3-liter Alfa Romeo disposal. In 1934 Ghersi started for Scuderia Ferrari , in 1935 and 1936 again on a private Maserati 8CM . After he only contested a few races in 1937, Ghersi competed for the Scuderia Torino in 1938 and 1939 in Alfa Romeo Grand Prix cars and Maserati Voiturettes at numerous racing events. Then he ended his active career.
