Mario Lemina (born September 1, 1993 in Libreville ) is a Gabonese - French football player who is under contract with the English club FC Southampton . Lemina switched to Galatasaray Istanbul on loan during the 2019/20 season .
Career
In the club
Lemina comes from the youth department of FC Lorient , in which he was active until 2012. After numerous appearances for the second team, he made his debut for Lorient's first team in Ligue 1 on January 26, 2013 . In the 1: 2 defeat against AS Nancy , he was substituted on in the 74th minute. In the 2012/13 season , Lemina completed nine more games for Lorient. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season , Lemina had already established herself as a regular player and was in the starting line-up of Lorient for the first four match days.
On the last day of the summer transfer period, September 2, 2013, Lemina switched to league rivals Olympique Marseille for around four million euros . In the stronger team, Lemina first had to be satisfied with the status of the substitute player before he played regularly. Towards the end of the season he lost his place in the team again. He was also on the field in four Champions League games. At the end of the season, the team was only sixth and missed re-qualification for the European Cup. In the 2014/15 season , Lemina finally became a regular - either in central midfield or as a full-back - and played 23 games in the league, at the end of which Marseille was able to qualify for the Europa League again. Lemina was also on the field in the first matches of the 2015/16 season .
Again shortly before the transfer deadline, Lemina moved on August 31, 2015 on loan to the Italian champions Juventus Turin . At the end of April 2016, he was finally committed to a transfer fee of 9.5 million euros, which can increase by one million euros, and given a contract until June 30, 2020.
For the 2019/20 season, Lemina was loaned to Galatasaray Istanbul. The Turkish club paid a loan fee of one million euros, and Galatasaray also had a purchase option of 16 million euros, which was valid until June 30, 2020.
In the national team
Lemina has played for France's U-20s since 2013 and became U-20 world champion with her in the same year . He played a total of six games before being included in the U-21 selection , for which he only played one game in 2013.
In January 2015, Lemina was in the squad for the Gabonese national team for the first time when he was appointed to the expanded squad for the 2015 African Championship . However, he was not part of the team and returned to his club. In June of that year he announced that he definitely wanted to play for Gabon and not for France . Lemina was then nominated again in September 2015, but remained without commitment.
