Personal

Mario Gómez García was founded in 1985 as the son of a German mother and one from Andalucia coming Spaniard in Baden-Württemberg Riedlingen born. His double surname is not derived from his father and mother, as is usual in Spain, but corresponds to his father's full surname. He grew up with his sister, who is three years older than him, in the neighboring town of Unlingen . As a teenager, his father moved with his Andalusian family from Albuñán in the province of Granada to Baden-Württemberg.

In favor of his professional career in football, he finished the commercial Johann-Friedrich-von-Cotta -Schule in Stuttgart-Ost in 2003 after the twelfth grade with the school part of the technical college entrance . He had previously enjoyed individual lessons at the elite football school . Like many VfB Stuttgart players, Gómez completed his community service at the Waiblingen vocational training center .

Gómez has been married to the model Carina Wanzung since July 22, 2016. In May 2018, the two parents became.

Club career

youth

Gómez was registered with SV Unlingen when he was four years old. At the age of five he started playing football there and stayed until the D youth. Then he moved to the C-youth of FV Bad Saulgau , then he was for a season at SSV Ulm . In summer 2001, when he was just 16 years old, he moved to the youth department of VfB Stuttgart .

In the 2003/04 season he made 19 regional league appearances for the amateur team of VfB and scored six goals. He made his debut on August 9, 2003 (2nd matchday), when he came on for Florian Lechner in the 79th minute , in the 0-1 home defeat by Kickers Offenbach ; his first goal on October 10, 2003 (11th matchday) meant in the 88th minute the 3-0 final score in the home win against Rot-Weiß Erfurt .

On May 8, 2004 (32nd matchday) - in the 48th minute for Imre Szabics - he made his Bundesliga debut in the 2-1 defeat at Hamburger SV . He played internationally on March 9, 2004 - when he came on for Andreas Hinkel in the 81st minute - when his team drew 0-0 at Chelsea in the second leg of the Champions League .

In the 2004/05 season , Gomez scored 15 goals in 24 games for the amateur team and recommended himself for the professional squad, for which he came to eight first division appearances. In the following season he was already used 30 times (6 goals) and also scored his first Bundesliga goal, which meant a 2-1 away win at 1. FSV Mainz 05 on September 17, 2005 (5th matchday) . In 2005 they reached the league cup final , which was lost 1-0 to FC Schalke 04 . He has played five UEFA Cup games (two goals) and three League Cup games . He then extended his contract with VfB Stuttgart until June 30, 2011.

A March 10, 2007 (25 Matchday) goalless draw at home against VfL Wolfsburg suffered medial ligament tear in the knee , forcing him to two-month break, and brought him - at this point in the scoring charts in the lead - on the possibility of winning the " Torjägerkanone ”- but not about winning the German championship ; his first professional title. The final of the DFB Cup on May 26, 2007, however, was lost 3-2 to 1. FC Nürnberg . Due to the successful season, Gómez was voted Germany's Footballer of the Year in 2007.

In the following season, Gómez scored 19 goals in 25 games and was the second-best goalscorer behind Luca Toni from Bayern Munich . Internationally, he and his team were eliminated after the group stage of the Champions League and in the league they finished sixth in the table.

After a disappointing start to the 2008/2009 season and seven goals in the first half of the season, Gómez improved and scored 17 goals in the second half. These included three goals in the 3-0 away win against 1. FC Köln on April 18 (28th matchday) and four goals on 9 May (31st matchday) in the 4-1 win at home against the league leaders and later Champion VfL Wolfsburg . As in the previous year, he was the top German goalscorer in the Bundesliga, but behind the two Wolfsburg-based Grafite and Edin Džeko .

For a transfer fee of an estimated 30 million euros - at the time the most expensive commitment of FC Bayern Munich and at the same time the most expensive in the Bundesliga - Gómez received a four-year contract with the German record champions for the 2009/10 season . In the first competitive game for Bayern on August 2, 2009, he scored two goals in a 3-1 win against SpVgg Neckarelz in the DFB Cup . On May 1, 2010, Gómez completed his 150th Bundesliga game against VfL Bochum . In his first year with Bayern, he was unable to continue his performance at VfB Stuttgart, but still scored 14 goals and won the double ( championship and DFB Cup ) at the end of the season . The final of the Champions League was also reached, but it was lost 2-0 to Inter Milan .

At the beginning of the 2010/11 season , Gómez only came for short appearances. However, on matchday 7 against Borussia Dortmund he was back in the starting lineup for the first time in a long time, but remained goalless. Partly due to a good performance on the previous match day, partly due to several staff failures, Gómez was again in the starting line-up in the game against Hannover 96 and scored all goals for a 3-0 victory. He scored a total of twelve goals in this and the following eight Bundesliga games up to the winter break, plus six goals in the Champions League and two in the DFB Cup. He scored three times against CFR Cluj and VfB Stuttgart . In total, he scored five triple goals this season in the Bundesliga - Gerd Müller's record is six - as well as Hanover and Stuttgart against 1. FC Kaiserslautern , Bayer 04 Leverkusen and FC St. Pauli . Against Leverkusen, Gómez scored his first “flawless” hat trick in the Bundesliga. In the game at FC St. Pauli on May 7, 2011, he also scored his 100th Bundesliga goal. With a total of 28 goals this season, Gómez won the Bundesliga top scorer for the first time , making him the sixth Bayern striker to succeed. With an additional eight goals in eight games of the Champions League, with which he was second best goalscorer together with Samuel Eto'o , and three goals in the DFB Cup, he achieved a quota of 39 goals in 45 competitive games.

In the 2011/12 season, too , he met frequently from the start. He scored another hat trick in the game against 1. FC Kaiserslautern and four goals in the game against SC Freiburg . In the preliminary round of the 2011/2012 Champions League , Gómez succeeded in becoming the first German player in the Champions League to hit another flawless hat trick in Bayern's 3-2 win against SSC Napoli . In the same season he was the first German player to score four goals in a Champions League game in the round of 16 in Bayern's 7-0 win against FC Basel . His twelve goals in the Champions League season would have been a record if Lionel Messi had n't scored 14 goals in the same year, surpassing Gómez. In the Bundesliga, too, he had been in first place for a long time, with 26 goals only second place in the top scorer list behind Klaas-Jan Huntelaar . It also fits that FC Bayern had to be content with second place in the Bundesliga and the DFB Cup as well as in the Champions League this season. In the final of the "premier class", which took place in Munich , Gómez scored on penalties against Petr Čech , but lost with his team to Chelsea . In April 2012, Gómez extended his contract with FC Bayern Munich until 2016.

After an injury that he sustained in preparation for the 2012/13 season , he was out for three and a half months. He did not return until the end of November 2012. In his first Bundesliga game after the injury, he scored his first competitive goal of the season against Hannover 96, 26 seconds after being substituted on. As a result of his injury Gómez lost his place at the from VfL Wolfsburg committed Mario Mandzukic . Despite numerous substitutions and substitutions, Gómez met regularly in the league. On April 16, 2013 he shot a hat trick within six minutes after being substituted in the cup semifinals against VfL Wolfsburg. On matchday 28, he secured the German championship with FC Bayern, which had never been decided so early in the Bundesliga. On May 25, he won the Champions League, although he was substituted on in the final just before the end. He also scored two goals in the DFB Cup final , which was won 3-2 in Berlin against his former club VfB Stuttgart, and with six goals he was the top scorer of the competition.

Measured by the goals scored per minute played, Gómez had the highest rate of all players in the history of FC Bayern Munich and temporarily held the club record. With a total of 11,267 minutes played, he scored 113 goals, which corresponds to 0.90 goals per 90 minutes. With this rate he was even ahead of Gerd Müller , who scored 365 goals in 38,155 minutes and thus came to a rate of 0.86 goals per 90 minutes.

AC Florence

For the 2013/14 season , Gómez moved to Serie A at Fiorentina . On August 26, 2013 (1st matchday) he made his debut in a 2-1 win at home against Catania Calcio and scored on September 1, 2013 (2nd matchday) in a 5-2 win in the away game against CFC Genoa with the goal the interim 3-0 in the 42nd minute and the 5-2 penalty in stoppage time also his first goals for the "Fiorentina". On September 15, 2013 (3rd matchday) Gómez injured himself in the encounter with Cagliari Calcio and pulled a partial torn ligament and a strain in his right knee. A subsequent tendinitis delayed his return to the team until February 15, 2014, before he played a league game again on that day, in the 1: 2 defeat in the home game against Inter Milan . In the first leg of the first leg of the UEFA Europa League on March 13, 2014, Gómez was substituted on in the 67th minute and equalized in the 79th minute to make it 1-1 against Juventus Turin . On March 23, 2014, Gómez suffered a severe ligament stretch in his knee in the game against SSC Napoli .

Beşiktaş Istanbul

Mario Gómez at Beşiktaş Istanbul (2015)

On July 30, 2015, Gómez was awarded to Beşiktaş Istanbul until the end of the 2015/16 season . He made his league debut on August 16, 2015 in a 5-2 win in the away game against Mersin İdman Yurdu , when he came on for Oğuzhan Özyakup in the 73rd minute ; he scored his first two goals for Beşiktaş on September 13, 2015 in a 2-0 home win against Istanbul Başakşehir . On April 11, 2016, he scored the first goal in Istanbul's new Vodafone Arena . On May 15, 2016, he and his team won the championship prematurely on the penultimate matchday 3-1 in the home game against Osmanlıspor FK , in which he scored 3-0 . With 26 goals, Gómez was also the top scorer in the Süper Lig. He is the foreign player with the most competitive goals in a season for Beşiktaş. On July 20, 2016 - a few days after the attempted coup in Turkey - Gómez announced that he would not permanently change to Beşiktaş after his vacation after the European Championship because of the political situation in the country .

VfL Wolfsburg

For the 2016/17 season , Gómez moved to VfL Wolfsburg and thus returned to the Bundesliga. He made his Bundesliga debut for VfL on September 10, 2016 (2nd matchday) in a 0-0 home game against 1. FC Köln . He scored his first Bundesliga goal after returning from Turkey on October 22nd, 2016 in a 3-1 defeat in the away game against SV Darmstadt 98 with the goal to make it 1-1 in the 60th minute. Gómez scored a hat trick on April 2, 2017 in the away game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen between the 80th and 87th minute of the game. This is the fifth fastest hat-trick in the Bundesliga to date and the fastest in an away game. At the end of the season, Gómez finished 16th with VfL Wolfsburg after a 2-1 defeat on the last matchday at Hamburger SV and thus had to play two relegation games to keep the league against the second division third Eintracht Braunschweig . In the first leg in Wolfsburg he had put a ball on the edge of the box with his hand for Yunus Malli , which was overlooked by referee Sascha Stegemann ; Instead, he awarded VfL Wolfsburg a penalty, which Gómez converted to the 1-0 winner. Since VfL Wolfsburg also won the second leg in Braunschweig 1-0, they managed to stay in the league. In the league games, Gómez contributed 16 goals.

For the 2017/18 season , Gómez was appointed team captain of VfL by head coach Andries Jonker . He succeeded Diego Benaglio, who had migrated to AS Monaco . In the first half of the season he scored a goal in twelve games after being unable to train for several weeks due to a tear in the joint capsule in his left ankle and a torn ligament.

Return to VfB Stuttgart

Mario Gómez at VfB Stuttgart 2019

For the second half of the 2017/18 season Gómez returned to VfB Stuttgart . On December 28, 2017, he signed a contract dated June 30, 2020. In his comeback at the start of the second half of the season against Hertha BSC on January 13, 2018, he scored the goal for a 1-0 home win in the Mercedes-Benz Arena when Herthan's Niklas Stark lifted the ball into his own goal when he fouled Gómez . In a 1-1 draw against his ex-club VfL Wolfsburg on February 3, 2018, he scored his first own goal after his comeback. Although VfB Stuttgart had not won any away in the season so far, Gómez then scored three away wins in a row with his goals, which were decisive for the leap into the secured midfield of the table. With a double-goal win against TSG Hoffenheim on matchday 33 of his return season, he was finally successful in front of goal again in the home stadium for the first time.

In the 2018/19 season, Gómez scored seven goals this season. In the end he was with VfB in 16th place in the table and had to compete in the relegation against 1. FC Union Berlin ; there he met in the first leg for the interim 2-1 lead. The game ended 2-2. After a 0-0 second leg in Berlin, VfB relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga due to the away goals rule . Shortly thereafter, Gómez decided to go to the second division with VfB and to fulfill his contract, which was valid until June 2020. After his last Bundesliga game on June 28, 2020 with a substitution in the 82nd minute in the 1: 3 defeat in the home game against SV Darmstadt 98 , in which he was also his last with the 1: 1 goal in the 42nd minute Goal scored, and the achieved promotion to the top German league, he announced his immediate end of career.

National team

Gómez went through Germany's junior teams since the U15 and took part in several tournaments. For the U-20 national team he played eight times, the first time on September 1, 2004 in a 3-0 victory over Switzerland and the last time on June 1, 2005 in the 2: 3 defeat against China in Kleve. He made his debut for the U-21 national team on October 11, 2005 in a 3-0 win over Austria in Sankt Veit. In his fourth game, on September 5 against Romania in Wilhelmshaven, he also scored his only goal in a 5-1 win. There were two more games against England, both of which were lost 1-0. He played the last two international matches for Perspektiv- Team 2006 : on September 6, 2005 in a 1-1 draw against Turkey's A2 national team in Ankara and on November 15, 2005 in a 5-2 win over Austria's national team in Mattersburg , in which he scored a goal in the 40th minute with the goal to make it 2-0 in the meantime.

In the 2006/07 season Gómez played his way through good performances in the senior national team , in which he scored a goal on his debut on February 7, 2007 in the multifunctional arena in Düsseldorf against Switzerland (3-1).

EM 2008

At the European Championship in 2008 he played the three preliminary round matches from the start; in the final against Spain he was substituted on. With his performance in the tournament Gómez could not convince; he missed scoring chances and remained without a goal.

World Cup 2010

In the following test matches as well as in the World Cup qualification he was initially unsuccessful, which earned him whistles from the audience and criticism in the media. But national coach Joachim Löw repeatedly expressed his confidence in him. At the beginning of June 2009, he ended this " goal doldrums" at least in friendly matches when he scored four goals against the United Arab Emirates , one of which was voted Goal of the Month.

Gómez took part in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . He was substituted on in four games, but remained without a goal.

In competitive games, Gómez was still goalless for almost three years. In October 2010 he scored his first competitive goal in a long time against Kazakhstan after a substitution. After that, the previous substitute player, Miroslav Klose, played more often in the starting eleven due to some injuries and was also involved in the victories of the German team against the teams from Azerbaijan , Turkey and Belgium with one goal each in the European Championship qualification . He scored against every single German opponent. As part of the qualification, he scored Germany on June 3, 2011 in Austria with two goals to a 2-1 success. In the Ernst Happel Stadium , he hit the goal that he was unable to score at Euro 2008 despite great chances, and spontaneously kissed the goal post after his first goal. Observers rated this as overcoming his trauma of bad chances in the national jersey and the associated criticism of him from the media and fans, which had reached a high point here three years earlier. Nevertheless, due to his history, whistles repeatedly come up against him when he is substituted on or when performances are mixed, which often only stop after he has scored a goal.

In his 50th international match on November 11, 2011, in a test match at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev in a 3-3 win against Ukraine , he led the team onto the field as captain for the first time .

EM 2012

In the first group game of the European Championship on June 9, 2012, he scored the winning goal to make it 1-0 against Portugal . In the second game on June 13, 2012, he scored both goals in a 2-1 win against the Netherlands and was voted Player of the Match . In the last group game against Denmark , he also made an assist in the 1-0 by Lukas Podolski . Nevertheless, he had to share the pitch with Miroslav Klose in every game . In the first three games Klose was substituted on for him, in the quarter-finals against Greece Klose got the place in the starting line-up and Gómez was substituted on. In the semi-final against Italy Gómez was back in the starting line-up, but could not prevent the 1: 2 defeat . With three goals and one assist, he finished second on the list of goalscorers behind the Spaniard Fernando Torres , who ousted Gómez from first place in the final and had the same record, but needed fewer minutes.

No nomination for the 2014 World Cup

Just like the first half of his last season at Bayern, Gómez missed the entire qualification for the following World Cup due to injury . Even after his move to Fiorentina, he was unable to play a competitive game due to an early, protracted knee injury. There were only two friendlies in a year and a half. In public, there were several hopes that Gómez would be fit in time after recovering from injury. But due to several following injuries in the first half of 2014, most recently shortly before the start of the tournament preparation, he could not be appointed to the squad for the 2014 World Cup and missed his first title win in 18 years.

EM 2016: return to the national team

For the first games after the World Cup and the start of qualification for the Euro 2016 from September 2014, he returned to the national team. In the game in Düsseldorf against Argentina (2: 4) he made his comeback after a year, but missed several scoring chances, which is why he was whistled again alone, while the rest of the team were celebrated. After the game, Gómez described the whistles as "a bit normal now". In the following competitive game four days later he was no longer used. Due to further injuries and the resulting weakness in form in Florence, he was not nominated further and also missed the entire European Championship qualification. Only after moving to Turkey and the subsequent increase in performance was he reappointed and on November 13, 2015, he played for the first time in a year and a half in the game against France (0: 2) overshadowed by the terrorist attacks in Paris .

Gómez was in the national team for the 2016 European Football Championship . In the third preliminary round match against Northern Ireland he scored the winning goal to make it 1-0 and in the round of 16 against Slovakia the goal to make it 2-0 (final score 3-0). With a total of five goals at European Championships, he is the most successful German European Championship goalscorer alongside Jürgen Klinsmann . In the quarter-finals against Italy , Gómez suffered a torn hamstring in his right back thigh and had to be replaced in the 72nd minute. Due to this injury, he fell out for the rest of the European Championship.

World Cup 2018

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia , he was eliminated with the national team after the group stage; he was a substitute for all three games.

On August 5, 2018, Gómez resigned from the national team until further notice and stated that he would be available again if the national coach saw a need before the 2020 European Championship .
