Hamburger SV became the first in the 1978/79 season of the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship .

Season overview

Hamburger SV won its first German championship in the Bundesliga in the 1978/79 season, the fourth overall. After the final whistle of the last home game, which HSV lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich, there was a hitherto unique mass jostling with a total of 72 injured when spectators stormed the lawn. VfB Stuttgart, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt followed, which also qualified for the UEFA Cup , as did Borussia Mönchengladbach, the winner of the UEFA Cup, who finished 10th in the Bundesliga. The 3rd place of 1. FC Kaiserslautern was surprising (for the first time under Kalli Feldkamp, best placement until 1991). He even played for the championship until matchday 27. VfB Stuttgart lost 4-1 to 1. FC Köln on matchday 33. Hamburger SV played 0-0 in Bielefeld at the same time. This made HSV German champions.

Fortuna Düsseldorf became German cup winners and was in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup, which Fortuna lost 3: 4 afterwards against FC Barcelona in Basel . In the Bundesliga, Düsseldorf took seventh place. Fortuna's striker Klaus Allofs was the Bundesliga top scorer with 22 goals.

The three newcomers (Arminia Bielefeld, 1. FC Nürnberg, and SV Darmstadt 98) were relegated again.

Several "farewells"

For several players, some of them "monuments", it was the last Bundesliga season. While Allan Simonsen moved to CF Barcelona in Mönchengladbach and Berti Vogts had said goodbye practically before the final match against Fortuna Düsseldorf, it was also the last game for Horst Köppel . From Werder Bremen Per Röntgen went back to his Danish homeland. Erich Beer left Hertha BSC. For Horst Bertl (Hamburger SV) June 13th was the first match in the USA at the Houston Hurricans.
