The Oberliga Berlin 1978/79 was the fifth season of the Berlin Association ballgame teams conducted Oberliga Berlin .
Champion Hertha Zehlendorf , which thus for the ascent to 2. Bundesliga games against the second of the Oberliga Nord qualified. The champions then took part in the amateur championship finals, where they lost in the final against ESV Ingolstadt-Ringsee .
Due to the relegation of Wacker 04 Berlin from the 2nd Bundesliga, in addition to the Berliner SV 1892 and Hellas-Nordwest , the newcomer VfB Neukölln also had to enter the subordinate state league. In return, the trotters FC Mariendorf and Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin rose for the following season .
Season course
Before the start of the season Union 06 , BFC Preussen and Spandauer SV (SSV) were considered favorites for the championship title, but during the season they were surprised by the Hertha Zehlendorf youngsters, whose average age was 22 years. Under the slogan "We are rising" a performance-oriented team had come together in the south of Berlin at the "small Hertha", which worked under professional-like conditions and attracted attention with spectacular offensive football. In the initial phase, the Spandau BC 06 caused a sensation, which was at the top of the table until the 4th match day and on match day 5 in the derby against SSV, with 2,482 spectators, had the biggest crowd of the season. In the period that followed, the battle for the top developed into a duel between Zehlendorf and Prussia. After the first half of the season, both clubs were tied for minus points (Prussia two games less), with the direct duel going to Lankwitz with a 2-1 home win. The second half of the season started slowly, as four complete match days were canceled in a row due to the snowy winter, which is why the season had to be extended by three weeks. The head-to-head race for the top continued between Zehlendorf and Preussen until the penultimate matchday. This was the second leg of the rivals, who were still equal on points, in the Ernst Reuter Stadium in Zehlendorf, which the hosts won 2: 1. So Zehlendorf had the title due to the much better goal difference and qualified for the promotion games to the 2nd Bundesliga and then for the amateur championship finals. Spandauer SV caused a scandal at the beginning of April. After the presidium put their coach Gerd Achterberg on leave after the last training session before the away game at Hertha Zehlendorf, the team refused to play there. Instead, a strengthened young league eleven (U23) ran up and conceded the only double-digit defeat of the league round with 10-0. As there was no agreement between the "rebels" and the board, Spandau played the season with the newly formed team to the end. This got four points, so that the SSV was not in danger of relegation. But the two promoted FV Brandenburg / Lichterfelde (BraLi) and VfB Neukölln were involved in the relegation battle from the start . After a weak first half of the season, both understood how to improve steadily in the second half of the season and so on the 22nd matchday Hellas-Nordwest in the year of its 75th existence and on the 28th matchday the traditional Berliner SV 1892 were relegated to the direct relegation places. On the last day of the match, BraLi secured relegation with a goalless draw at Neukölln. The people of Neukölln hoped in vain for the Zehlendorfer to be promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga and had to move into the subordinate regional league after just one year.
