The Football Oberliga Nordrhein 1978/79 was the first season of the Oberliga Nordrhein .

After the upper league was reintroduced as the third performance level in the north of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1974 , equivalent game classes were established nationwide in 1978, one of which was to be carried out jointly by the Mittelrhein Football Association and the Niederrhein Football Association as the Oberliga Nordrhein. The new league was made up of the nine best teams from the previously third-rate Mittelrhein Association League and the seven best teams from the Niederrhein Association League, as well as the second division relegated 1. FC Bocholt and Schwarz-Weiß Essen .

The champions of the Oberliga were entitled to direct promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga , which Rot-Weiß Oberhausen finally achieved with a five-point lead over 1. FC Bocholt and thus also took part in the amateur championship. In this, the team was defeated in the semifinals against Hertha Zehlendorf .

Borussia Brand , Blau-Weiß Niederembt , 1. FC Viersen and SC Jülich were relegated to the subordinate association leagues Mittelrhein and Niederrhein , for which Rhenania Richterich and Westwacht Aachen from the association league Mittelrhein and the second team from in the following season 1979/80 Bayer 05 Uerdingen and BV 08 Lüttringhausen were promoted from the Lower Rhine Association to the Oberliga. The rise of Oberhausen was not offset by another team, so that the following season took place with only 17 teams.
