The Verbandsliga Mittelrhein 1977/78 was the 22nd season and last season of the Verbandsliga Mittelrhein , which was the top division of amateur football for men from 1956 to 1978 . Until 1978, this league, together with the association leagues Niederrhein and Westphalia, formed the substructure of the 2nd Bundesliga and was third-class in the German soccer league system of that time . In 1978 the Oberliga Nordrhein was introduced as the new third highest German division under the 2nd Bundesliga.

Season end

The SC Viktoria Köln was Middle Rhine Champion. In the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga North , the Höhenberger winners in Group North A and were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga. The second in the table, SV Baesweiler 09 , took part in the 1978 German amateur championship as a representative from the Middle Rhine region and was eliminated in the quarter-finals.

The clubs in places 2 to 10 qualified for the newly created Oberliga Nordrhein , the clubs in places 11 to 14 remained in the fourth-class association league. The SC Brühl 06/45 and the Oberbrucher BC 09 were relegated to the Landesliga Mittelrhein .
