The  football amateur league Rhineland 1977/78  was the 26th and final season of the third class 1st amateur league . After the introduction of the Oberliga Südwest in 1978 as the highest amateur league , this league was renamed " Verbandsliga Rheinland " (also called the Rhineland League) and from that point on was only fourth class.

Rhineland champion was again last year's champion TuS Neuendorf , who again failed in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga South with second place in the southwest group and thus played in the new Oberliga Südwest. The FSV SALMROHR took as Rhineland-representatives at the German Football Amateur Championship in 1978 in part and failed in the first round at FC Rastatt 04 (South Baden). The clubs up to 5th place qualified for the new Oberliga Südwest. Eintracht Höhr-Grenzhausen had to go down to the 2nd amateur league. The remaining teams played in the Rhineland Association League next season. For the following association league season 1978/79 came as climbers from the 2nd amateur league of TuS Oberwinter , the amateurs of Eintracht Trier , SpVgg Bendorf , VfL Trier , VfL Hamm , SV Maischeid, Ahrweiler BC and SG Eintracht Lahnstein .
