Club history

In 1905 a football club was founded under the name “FC Siegfried 05 Xanten” as one of the predecessor clubs of today's TuS. After a merger with the "Xantener Turnverein" (gymnastics and athletics department) founded in 1898, the club was renamed to "TuR Siegfried 05 Xanten" in 1920. "DJK Viktor Xanten" was founded in 1922 as the second predecessor club, but was banned as early as 1934 like all DJK clubs. During the Second World War , gaming operations were severely restricted; after the end of the war, gaming operations were provisionally resumed under the name “TuB Siegfried Xanten 45”. TuR Siegfried 05 was re-established in 1948, and DJK Viktor Xanten in 1952. The "TTC Schwarz-Gelb Xanten" (table tennis), founded in 1934, was affiliated with DJK Viktor. Today's association TuS Xanten 05/22 was created in 1966 through a merger of the associations "TuR Siegfried 05 Xanten" and "DJK Viktor Xanten". The previously four departments were expanded to include the handball department in 1973, the swimming department in 1974, the coronary sports department in 1982 and the triathlon department in 1987. The cycling and martial arts departments were last established in 2010. In 2013 the club was awarded the gold star of sport for its outstanding integration work.

Departments

Soccer

Football has been played in Xanten since 1905, but only after the merger of TuR Siegfried and DJK Viktor in 1966 were greater successes achieved. Via promotion to the state league in 1971, the association league was reached in 1976 , which ended in 1978 with 4th place in the table and thus promotion to the newly created Oberliga Nordrhein , the then highest German amateur class and third highest division overall. With a 4th place and an average attendance of 972, the 1982/83 season was the club's most successful season. It was not until 1985 that the club was relegated to the association league, a year later relegated to the regional league, and in 1993 the club was relegated to the district class. 2010 was relegated to the district league A. In the following 2010/11 season, the TuS Xanten could not hold the league and slipped into the district league B. After a stay of two seasons in the district league B, they returned to the district league A as leaders in the 2012/13 season.

Xanten was able to take part in the DFB Cup three times . In 1975/76 they lost 2-0 at home to TS Woltmershausen in the first round. 1979/80 Xanten retired in the second round against Arminia Bielefeld on home ground with 1: 8, after the then second division SV Arminia Hannover could surprisingly be defeated 2: 1 in the first round . In 1981/82 Xanten lost to 1. SC Göttingen 05 with 0: 1 in the first round of the cup.

The most famous players of Xanten football include Armin Reutershahn , Heinz Peters and Günter Werschy .

Handball

In 1968, teachers at the Xanten Stiftsgymnasium gave the occasion to found the handball department. The first members of the department were high school students, but also athletes from other departments. In the 1970s , the men's first team was promoted to the 1st district class, while the women's team was even able to advance to the state league. The department had 160 members during this time, nine teams took part in the games of the Moers handball group.

In 2004 the department had 220 members. The men's team will play in the district league in 2019/20, the women's team in the regional league.

Coronary exercise

The coronary sports group owes its existence to Dr. Klaus Floss, on whose proposal the establishment of such a group was requested at the annual general meeting in May 1982. The first lesson with seven patients was held in October 1982, and in 2004 the department had around 90 members.

athletics

Athletics has been practiced in Xanten since 1905. The athletes of the early years were primarily gymnasts. This close connection between athletics and gymnastics only loosened in the mid-thirties, when the later multiple German champion Alfons Ida also became active in the club. After the war, it was not until 1952 that athletics started again in Xanten. After Alfons Ida started for other clubs at times, he returned to his hometown at the end of the 1950s and looked after Xanten athletes, including Erich Nabbefeld, who after two third places (1958/59) became German junior champion over 5000 meters in 1960. In the next few years, a few athletes took part in competitions, but the great successes failed to materialize. Successes were only achieved again from 1967, this time in the all-around competition. Almost every year Xanten athletes took part in German championships. The athletes achieved notable placements on a supraregional level and won titles for the North Rhine.

Bettina Rösen, who was among the top German youth discus throwers from 1980 to 1984, became German youth champion in 1982 and German junior champion in 1984 after the West German B youth title in 1980. Ingomar Radtke was the only cross-country skier at TuS Xanten for a long time. Then Manfred Gehrmann came along and built up a group of runners that can prove great national successes to this day. These include a German championship title, two West German championship titles and 16 North Rhine titles since the group was founded in autumn 1988. The most successful runners were Ina Reinders , who celebrated great successes above all as a triathlete, and Jeannine Hagedorn , who was West German before moving to Bayer 04 Leverkusen Champion 1995 over the 3000 meters. She achieved her greatest success in 1997 with the German championship title over the 3000 meters in Lüdenscheid. In 1997 and 1998, Veronika Otto ranked number 1 on the German best list several times and collected several North Rhine titles. She reached her high in 1999 with sixth place in the German championships over the 1500 meters, Mareike Gehrmann won the West German championship title over the 3000 meters in the same year. Lisa Schmidtke is considered one of the greatest German talents, with 19:46 minutes over 5 kilometers in first place in the W10 in Germany.

Since 1992 the athletics department has organized the nationally important "International Xanten City Run" every year.

Table tennis

The table tennis department was founded in 1934 as an independent association "TTC Schwarz-Gelb Xanten" and in 1952 it merged with the DJK Viktor Xanten.

In 1958, play began in the 1st district class and the season ended with promotion to the district class. In 1966 the first women's team was registered, with Sabine and Andrea Böttcher the TuS Xanten provided the district champions in doubles in the first season. In the same year, the first youth team was reported, which in 1971 caught up with the men's team and rose to the district class. The youth team achieved their first major success in 1974 with the district class championship and the West German runner-up championship.

After the temporary relegation to the district class, the 1st men's team rose again in 1974 to the district class and two years later was able to celebrate another promotion, this time to the district league. Again only two years later, in 1978 the first men's team was promoted to the regional league and at the same time the second men's team was promoted to the district class, only to be promoted again a year later with both men's teams, now the first men's team was playing in the association league, the 2nd men's team in the district league. In 1982 the first team was promoted to the league, while the second men's team was promoted to the regional league. After the relegation of the first men to the association league, they were promoted again in 1992. In 2000, the promotion round to the regional league was achieved for the first time, but like three years later it was missed when the promotion round was reached again. After the 2nd men's team had been dissolved in the meantime, the 1st team succeeded in re-qualifying for the promotion round in 2004, in which the table tennis department finally achieved promotion to the regional league. With 6:38 points they occupied the penultimate place and rose again to the top division. In 2011 they returned to the regional league. In 2013, the first men's team rose to second place in the Regionalliga West in the second division.

The senior team of the table tennis department won the West German runner-up in 2004 and thus reached the final round of the German championship in June 2004, where they finished 7th.

Triathlon

The triathlon department was founded on May 27, 1987 by Gerd Reinders and Friedhelm Forth. In addition to numerous athletes who keep themselves fit through regular training in swimming, cycling and running, there are some athletes who train performance-related and contest high-level competitions. The top performers in the first few years were Yves Reinders , who won several NRW championships, and above all Christian Billau , who became German youth champion in 1993 and thus ensured the triathlon department's first major success. The most successful young female triathlete in Xanten so far was Ina Reinders , who is considered the most successful young female triathlete in Germany. Before moving to the Asics team in Witten in 2000, she was three times German junior champion from 1996 to 2000 and junior European champion in 1996, third in the junior world championships and team world champion in the juniors. The triathletes of TuS Xanten take part in the league operation of the North Rhine-Westphalian Triathlon Association in the association league.

The nationally important Nibelungen Triathlon has been held since 1985 .
