Gerd Wirtz

Gerd "Pumuckl" Wirtz (born April 26, 1958 in Xanten ) is a former German soccer player .

The defensive midfielder came from the successful youth division of MSV Duisburg , which was German A-youth champions in 1977 and 1978. At the age of 19 Gerd Wirtz began his senior career in the Association League Niederrhein at TuS Xanten , with whom he qualified in 1978 for the newly founded, third-class Oberliga Nordrhein . In 1979 and 1981 he reached the main round of the DFB Cup with the club . In the summer of 1982 Gerd Wirtz was committed by the league competitor Rot-Weiß Oberhausen . The 1982/83 season ended with the championship and promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga , Wirtz, who is based on the right wing, came under coach Friedel Elting to 30 missions and one goal. From 1983 to 1986 he completed 53 second division games for RWO and scored three goals. After a year with the national division VfB Kleve , Gerd Wirtz, also known as "Pumuckl" or "Hexe" because of his hairstyle, moved to the first division club 1. FC Bocholt in 1987 , for whom he played for two more years.

After several (player) coaching stays on the Lower Rhine - including coaching his home club Xanten in the district league - Gerd Wirtz was the reserve team coach at SV Hönnepel-Niedermörmter from 2005 to 2011 . He then moved to the area of ​​talent scouting and youth development within the club. Since summer 2013 he has been training his former club TuS Xanten again. He led him to promotion to the district league in 2015 , which was followed by direct relegation. In the summer of 2017 he left the club again.
