Günter Werschy

Günter Werschy (born February 6, 1935 ) is a German former football player and coach .

Career

As a player he was active for TuS Xanten and Eintracht Duisburg . With Duisburger Eintracht Werschy played as a contract player from 1963 in the second-rate Regionalliga West , before an injury stopped him early and he switched to coaching.

After Eintracht's relegation in 1967 from the second division to the then Association League Niederrhein , Günter Werschy took over the coaching office there and managed to get promoted again by winning the championship in the 1967/68 season . However, this was followed by another descent in 1969. From 1970 to 1972 Günter Werschy was the coach of VfB Kleve in the Lower Rhine regional league . The following two years he took over the coaching position at the national league competitor 1. FC Bocholt , which he led unbeaten to the championship and promotion to the association league, the highest German amateur league at the time, in the 1973/74 season. In 1974 Werschy was hired by TuS Xanten as a trainer, where he worked for the next ten years. With this club, too, he rose from the state league to the association league in 1976, followed by a further rise to the newly founded football league in North Rhine-Westphalia in 1978 . With fifth place in 1980 and fourth place in 1983 , he achieved the best results there. TuS Xanten qualified three times for the DFB Cup under Günter Werschy . In 1975/76 they lost to TS Woltmershausen in the first round, in 1979/80 Xanten was eliminated in the second round against Arminia Bielefeld after the then second division SV Arminia Hannover could be defeated 2-1 in the first round . In the 1981/82 cup season, the team lost to 1. SC Göttingen 05 0-1 in the first round. For the 1984/85 season Werschy took over the coaching position at the upper division VfL Rhede .
