history
The club was founded on April 26, 1920 under the name "Sport- und Spielverein Rhede". The enthusiasm for football in and around Rhede was enormous at that time, the club already had 64 active members in its first year of foundation. In 1938 the two still existing sports clubs "Spiel- und Sportverein" and "Turnverein" Rhede merged to form the "Verein für Leibesübungen" (VfL), which offered various sports such as football , gymnastics , athletics and handball . After the Second World War , the two clubs separated again, but the original "game and sports club" retained the name VfL.
The most successful era of the first football team began in the 1970s, when VfL Rhede successively promoted the state league (1976), the Verbandsliga Niederrhein (1978) and finally in 1982 under coach Dieter Münnich even promotion to the third-highest German division, the Oberliga Nordrhein , reached. The season brought top division football to Rhede for the first time and well-known opponents presented themselves to the audience in the Rheder Sports Center. Well-known traditional clubs such as Rot-Weiß Oberhausen , 1. FC Bocholt , SC Viktoria Köln , Schwarz-Weiß Essen and Wuppertaler SV brought great enthusiasm among the spectators. At the guest appearance of 1. FC Bocholt, a record was reached with 8,000 visitors.
After a year-long guest appearance and relegation, the team was immediately promoted again in the 1983/84 season and VfL Rhede played for four years from 1984 to 1988 in the Oberliga Nordrhein. Then began, also due to financial legacy, the sporting descent of the club, you commuted between the association and regional league. In the 2008/09 season, VfL Rhede celebrated its return to the Lower Rhine League as the state league champion. In each of the following two seasons they were relegated.
VfL ended the 2011/12 season in third place and qualified for the newly founded Oberliga Niederrhein , from which the team was relegated to the Landesliga Niederrhein again in 2014 . VfL ended the 2016/17 season of the Landesliga Niederrhein in third place in Group 2 and thus qualified for two qualifying games for promotion to the Oberliga Niederrhein against the third in Group 1. The first game at 1. FC Monheim ended 0-0. The second game, a home game against 1. FC Monheim, ended 2-2. Because of the away goals rule , the promotion to the league was missed.
