From the Oberliga Nordrhein, the club Rot-Weiss Essen , which had only been relegated from the second division last year, qualified for the promotion rounds ahead of local rivals Schwarz-Weiß Essen , but failed in the promotion round and thus remained in the Oberliga. In the subordinate association leagues Middle Rhine and Lower Rhine up to the following season 1985/86 the TuS Xanten , the SV Baesweiler 09 and Olympia Bocholt , while in return, the Bonner SC and Sportfreunde Hamborn 07 ascended.
