The FC Olympia Bocholt 1911 eV is a sports club from Bocholt . The soccer team plays their games in the Olympic Stadium on Hünting with 10,000 seats.

Foundation phase

In the autumn of 1911 the FC Olympia Bocholt 1911 eV was launched. To this day, the club has kept its name without merging with other clubs and is therefore the oldest club in the Westphalian Bocholt. The first time of the club was marked by the chaos of war and the associated lack of playing opportunities.

Development during and after the Second World War

Almost at the beginning of the Second World War , gaming operations were severely restricted. So it happened that the Olympics in the Tschammer Cup 1941 did not play against SpVg Emsdetten 05 despite reaching the 1st main round of the Westphalia / Niederrhein region . Many members of the club were drafted into military service and over 60 active players were killed . In addition, there was the loss of his own sports field and all sports equipment, the archive and the club flag. Nevertheless, gaming operations were resumed as early as 1949. The club qualified in 1956 for the Landesliga Niederrhein, the second highest amateur class, and reached the main round of the West German Cup several times . In 1959 FC Olympia lost 6-2 to first division club Rot-Weiß Oberhausen , in 1965 5-0 to Preußen Münster and in the 1970 cup, after a 4-0 win against SC Kleve 63, the 2nd round was the last stop when the regional league team VfR Neuss lost almost 2: 3.

International match at Hünting

On September 19, 1956, there was an international match between the amateur teams of the German Football Association and the Netherlands in the FC Olympia stadium. In front of 15,000 spectators, the DFB-Elf defeated the Dutch under the eyes of the then national coach Sepp Herberger 4-1.

Greatest successes

In the 1970s, FC Olympia was almost consistently represented in the highest amateur leagues. In 1969/70 the club celebrated its first promotion to the Niederrhein Association League , the highest amateur class. In a playoff for the championship and promotion in front of 10,000 spectators, arch rivals 1. FC Bocholt , who were tied on points, were defeated with 4: 3 goals. The descent two years later was followed in 1973 by the immediate return to the association league.

In 1976 the club reached the second main round in the DFB Cup . After a 4: 4 draw at the Bundesliga club Tennis Borussia Berlin, the club lost in the replay in Bocholt (1: 1) only after a penalty shoot-out. One of the club's greatest successes was winning the Lower Rhine Championship in 1977/78 and the associated participation in the promotion round to what was then the 2nd Bundesliga North in 1978.

The derbies against 1. FC Bocholt attracted a lot of attention. Both clubs played for a long time in the then highest German amateur league, the Oberliga Nordrhein . The encounters were sometimes watched by up to 15,000 spectators. By the 1980s at the latest, FC Olympia was only number two in town behind local rivals. Stays in the upper league were short-lived. The last descent was in 1987/88 . In 1991 there was another relegation to the Lower Rhine regional league.

Club successes

Current development

The club's first team last reached the Niederrhein Association League for one year in the 2005/06 season. At the beginning of the 2006/07 season, the national league team was trained by former Bundesliga player Werner Buttgereit . After only a few games, however, he resigned after the desired success could not be set. Leo Ricken , former league player of 1. FC Bocholt, finally took over the coaching office and managed to stay up. After Leo Ricken was released in spring 2009, Burkhard Bennewirtz took over the team. But after only 2 months Bennewirtz was released again. The 2008/09 regional league season ended with relegation to the regional league. Also in the relegation the class (3: 0 against TG Hilgen 04 and 2: 3 against SV Wersten 04) could not be held because only the winner remained in the regional league. In the following season, coach Marco Scholten took over the district division. After relegation, the club started in the 2010/11 season in the district league A of the football district 11 Rees / Bocholt of the FVN . After four years under coach Dennis Giesen, he returned to the district league in 2014. In the 2016/17 season, the club was relegated to the district league A.
