career

Herbert Sprenger developed in the 1970s in the Niederrhein association league into a reliable goalscorer at his home club FC Olympia Bocholt . The striker was Niederrheinmeister with the club in 1977/78 and was a participant in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga , where however Wacker 04 Berlin and Holstein Kiel had to admit defeat. In the 1976/77 DFB Cup he scored three goals in the game against Bundesliga club Tennis Borussia Berlin (4: 4 a.s.). In the 1979/80 season he was top scorer in the Oberliga Nordrhein with 23 goals . In the summer, Sprenger and his teammate Berni Korbel moved to local rivals 1. FC Bocholt , who had been promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga North as champions . Since after the 1980/81 season, however, the single-track second division was introduced, the chances of relegation were slim and the club immediately rose again. In the 1981/82 DFB Cup , 1. FC Bocholt reached the round of 16 thanks to Sprenger's goals, where they were only defeated by 1. SC Göttingen 05 in the replay .

Herbert Sprenger played a total of 25 second division games and scored five goals.
