West German Cup
The West German Cup was a cup competition in the West German Football Association , which was played from the 1949/50 season to the 1973/74 season. The best teams then qualified for the following season of the DFB Cup . Already in the seasons 1931/32 and 1932/33 there was a West German Association Cup held by the West German Game Association .
From 1954 to 1960, only the West German Cup winner took part in the DFB Cup. There was no competition in the 1954/55 season. From 1960/61 there was no more final. Instead, the club won the West German Cup, which achieved the best placement in the DFB Cup. With the introduction of the Bundesliga , the West German Cup was only intended for clubs below the Bundesliga from the 1965/66 season.
In the 1973/74 season, the last West German Cup competition took place. Since the introduction of the 2nd Bundesliga for the 1974/75 season , the teams in the first two leagues have qualified directly for the DFB Cup. Since then, the amateur representatives have been played through the association cup competitions.
