Association League Westphalia

The Football Oberliga Westfalen 1978/79 was the first season of the Oberliga Westfalen .

After the Oberliga was reintroduced as the third performance level in the north of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1974, equivalent divisions were set up nationwide in 1978 and thus also in the field of the Football and Athletics Association of Westphalia . The champions of the Oberliga Westfalen were entitled to direct promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga , which SC Herford finally achieved with a point ahead of TuS Schloss Neuhaus . The Herford team also qualified for the amateur championship , where they were eliminated in the first round against Hertha Zehlendorf .

In the association league , the Ahlener SV and, as a knocked-down bottom in the table, the SpVg Beckum rose , for which Teutonia Lippstadt and VfB Waltrop moved up into the league in the following season 1979/80 . The rise of Herford was compensated by the simultaneous, financially-related forced relegation Westfalia Hernes from the 2nd Bundesliga.

The game between VfB Rheine and SC Herford (3-2) was canceled and repeated due to spectator riots. The replay ended 0-0.
