The football league Baden-Württemberg 1978/79 was the first season of the league.

The Oberliga Baden-Württemberg was introduced in 1978 as the third highest German football class under the 2nd Bundesliga . It replaced the four amateur leagues North Württemberg, Black Forest Lake Constance, South Baden and North Baden, from which the five best teams of the previous season qualified for the new league.

The SSV Ulm 1846 won the first league championship with four points ahead of the SV Göppingen and went straight into the 2. Bundesliga South on. In addition, the Ulm team qualified for the German amateur championship , but were eliminated there in the first round against Rot-Weiß Oberhausen . In order to reduce the league that played with 20 teams in the first season to the planned number of 18 , five had to be five after the first year with SV Neckargerach , 1. FC Pforzheim , Heidenheimer SB , VfB Friedrichshafen and SSV Reutlingen 05 Clubs relegate.

The first top scorer was Karl-Heinz Walter from FV 09 Weinheim , who moved to VfR OLI Bürstadt in the 2nd Bundesliga after the season, with 26 goals.

The audience participation in the premiere season was above expectations. More than 1,500 visitors came to the stadiums on average for every league game, a number that has not yet been reached.
