SSV Ulm 1846, until 1980

The midfielder Dieter Kohnle, who had come from TSV Neu-Ulm, quickly took over the playmaker position in the black and whites in the Ulm Danube Stadium. His specialty in the standards for goal danger also helped him. When eight amateur league seasons started in Germany for the first time in 1978/79 and SSV Ulm won the championship with 17 Kohnle goals in Baden-Württemberg in 1846 , Kohnle and his team were promoted directly to the 2nd Bundesliga. In the games for the German amateur championship in June 1979, Ulm lost both encounters against North Rheinmeister Rot-Weiß Oberhausen and was eliminated from this competition. On the other hand, his debut on June 6, 1979 in the national football team of amateurs , which won the international match in Cadiz against Spain (juniors) with 4-0 goals, was encouraging for Kohnle .

In his first year in the 2nd Bundesliga, 1979/80, the conductor in Ulm midfield with 38 games and 14 goals - he was missing in only two league games - significantly helped his team to stay at the side of Walter Modick and Walter Kubanczyk . In the amateur national team, he and his club mate Kubanczyk played two Olympic qualifying games against Finland and Norway on September 13 and 26, 1979. Dieter Kohnle also stormed for Germany at the 154th and last appearance of the DFB team on November 14, 1979 in Baunatal.

VfB Stuttgart, 1980/81

Kohnle's talent was also noticed by VfB Stuttgart . The Swabians negotiated with Ulm and the player and the amateur national player switched to the Bundesliga for VfB Stuttgart for the 1980/81 round . Next came Charles Allgöwer and Joachim Loew from the Stuttgarter Kickers and the SC Freiburg VfB. The competition in the midfield of the team of coach Jürgen Sundermann - with Roland Hattenberger , Erwin Hadewicz , Hansi Müller , Karl Allgöwer and Hermann Ohlicher - Dieter Kohnle and Joachim Löw were no match. Kohnle was substituted on twice in the second half of the season, it wasn't enough against the top-class competition in the midfield of VfB Stuttgart, which was third in the table at the end of the season. Kohnle went back to Ulm for the SSV 1846.

SSV Ulm 1846, 1981 to 1987

Since the SSV Ulm 1846 in the meantime played again for the points in the AOL Baden-Württemberg, the playmaker experienced two title wins and two promotion rounds with the SSV 1846 in the years 1982 and 1983. In the second attempt against 1. FC Saarbrücken , VfR Bürstadt and SpVgg Unterhaching return to the 2nd Bundesliga. Kohnle's team held two laps in the second division, then it went back to the AOL in 1985 where the midfielder was able to celebrate the third championship immediately. In the promotion round in 1986 Ulm prevailed against FSV Salmrohr , Kickers Offenbach and TSV 1860 Munich and was back in the 2nd Bundesliga for the 1986/87 round. Dieter Kohnle scored ten goals in 32 missions, SSV Ulm 1846 achieved 13th place in the 1986/87 round and thus the goal of relegation. However, the financial situation of SSV Ulm in 1846 made drastic cuts in the salaries of licensed players necessary in the following season. Kohnle did not agree with this and surprisingly ended his career with SSV Ulm 1846 in the summer of 1987. The club was relegated again from the 2nd Bundesliga after the 1987/88 season.
