Kleinvernich (also Klein-Vernich or Klein Vernich ) is a district of the municipality of Weilerswist in the district of Euskirchen , North Rhine-Westphalia , and together with Großvernich and Horchheim forms the village of Vernich with 3361 inhabitants in 2011 and 3468 inhabitants in 2018 on an area of 15.23 km 2 . Kleinvernich alone had 733 inhabitants in 2011.

location

The district is located south of Weilerswist on Lommersumer Mühlengraben, a tributary of the Erft , which flows past to the east. In the east lies the district of Großvernich, in the south Horchheim.

The district road 3 runs through the village , on the outskirts the state road 163 and the district road 11 run .

history

Kleinvernich was first mentioned in 1332.

Culture and sights

Castle

The moated castle Kleinvernich, also called "Gürtzgensburg", is surrounded by a complete moat . Today it is used as an agricultural property and is inhabited.

Gut Antoniterhof

The square courtyard made of brick, built in 1781, is one of the oldest, listed courtyards in the town and has been included in the list of architectural monuments in Weilerswist .

Roman finds

In 2003 a Roman villa rustica was discovered during the development of a new building area , which existed from the 1st to the 3rd century and was still used to a limited extent in the 4th century AD. On the western edge of the settlement there was a small burial place with a relief sarcophagus made of limestone, an undecorated sarcophagus and an ash box . The place was ravaged by robbery graves at night , and grave goods were also stolen.
