Origin of name

The name Vernich could go back to the Roman Varinius, who had a villa near today's cemetery in Großvernich. The rough outlines of the villa's earth wall can still be seen today. Varinius had served as a legionnaire and after his military service he settled near the road between Cologne and Trier (today L 194 and K 3).

In 1145 Vernich was first mentioned in a document from Emperor Konrad III , in which the freedom of a property in Vävernich in the county of Ahr was confirmed.

middle Ages

Vernich was a Jülich subordinate in the Tomburg office. Herrmann von Tomburg and his wife Adelheid von Saffenburg gave Vernich a fief to Margrave Wilhelm von Jülich in 1342.

17th century

In the course of the Dutch War , the commander of the French army in the region and the cathedral chapter of Cologne signed a contract on November 3, 1678, according to which the electoral state of Cologne paid the sum of 70,000 Reichsthalers in cash for a contribution of 130,000 rations of hay and straw and 2,500 cows should. When the cathedral chapter refused to ratify the treaty, a crowd of 500 French plundered as far as Metternich and Vernich, where they terrorized the population and forced ratification.

19th century

At the beginning of the 19th century, Groß-Vernich was part of the mayor's office in Weilerswist in the Lechenich district and had around 380 inhabitants. In the middle of the 19th century there were more than 550.

Second World War

In December 1944, an ammunition train exploded in the area between Rübenkämpchen and the black bridge, which was attacked by enemy planes.

Incorporation

On July 1, 1969, the municipality of Vernich was incorporated into Weilerswist.

Infrastructure

There is the Spatzennest kindergarten and the Kirchtal daycare center with three groups each. The municipality of Weilerswist is responsible for this.

Holy Cross Church

In the Liber valoris 1308, a St. Nicholas chapel was mentioned in the village, which was elevated to a parish church in 1658. At the end of the 17th century it was demolished and a new church was built on this site . Johann VIII. Hugo von Orsbeck donated the necessary funds . It was consecrated in 1732 on the title: "Immaculate Conception of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary". Today it is called the Holy Cross Church . The church owns one of the most important works of European art, a wooden Albertus Magnus crucifix from 1248.

Castle

The two-part moated castle Groß-Vernich was built around 1300. Only a ruined tower that is in danger of collapsing reminds of the late Gothic castle.

In Groß-Vernich there is the handicraft and local history museum, which is maintained by the village beautification association. It is located in the old school in Groß-Vernich and is divided into areas of traditional handicrafts and daily village life including religious elements and agriculture.
