The Donaustadion is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the city of Ulm in Baden-Württemberg . The facility offers 19,500 seats, including 4,280 seats. The main stand has 1,280 seats, 830 of which are covered and 450 are uncovered. The modern counter grandstand has seats for 3,000 covered spectators. The curves in the stadium offer a total of 15,220 uncovered standing space. The stadium, not far from the Danube , is the venue for the SSV Ulm 1846 football club .

history

The stadium was the first of its kind in southern Germany. In 1925, at the inauguration ceremony as part of the regional gymnastics festival, around 40,000 spectators were counted. This was possible because at that time there was still no counter stand and the opening of the horseshoe-shaped stadium bordered on an adjacent meadow that was shared by the spectators. The wooden stand was destroyed during the war.

In 1952 the roofed grandstand, which still exists today, was built. The first changes were made with the stepped increase in standing room. In the 1980s, the benches on the main stand were replaced by individual seats and a floodlight system was installed. In 1999 a new counter stand with 3,000 covered seats was built, of which a separate spectator block with 500 seats was declared a non-smoking block. This measure was unique at the time and later found other imitators.

When the footballers of SSV Ulm 1846 , contrary to expectations, were promoted to the Bundesliga in 1999, additional grandstands were purchased that were used in three different places behind the standing room. This enabled the audience to be expanded from 19,500 to 23,000. The subsequent descent made further renovation work unnecessary, such as a new construction of the main grandstand and the roofing of the standing room.

In March 2011, the green seat shells on the main stand, which no longer complied with the latest fire protection regulations, were replaced by black and white seat shells to emphasize the ULM logo.

Athletics competitions

For decades, the Danube Stadium has proven itself as a track and field competition venue. In 1982 Jürgen Hingsen set his first world record here with 8714 points. Numerous athletics championships, such as the German all-around championships or the German championships , which were held in 2003, 2006, 2009, 2013 and 2014, will continue to be favored and the German youth championships will take place again in 2017 and the German championships again in 2018, including the stadium should be renovated.

Others

In the 1999/2000 season, the Donaustadion was the first Bundesliga club stadium to have a separate non-smoking block with 500 seats. This block still exists today, and this example has meanwhile also caught on in other stadiums in the Bundesliga.
