Structure of the lincosamide clindamycin

Lincosamides are a group of antibiotics . They can be called acylaminopyranosides because of their chemical structure ; this means that they are derived from monosaccharides with a six-membered ring structure, the pyranoses . The lincosamides include clindamycin and lincomycin .

Lincosamides have a bacteriostatic effect, i.e. they inhibit the growth of bacteria . By binding to the 50-S subunit of the ribosomes , they inhibit protein synthesis in bacteria. Due to the similar mode of action as macrolides , cross-resistance can occur.
