Neckargerach is a municipality in the Neckar-Odenwald district in Baden-Württemberg . It belongs to the European metropolitan region of Rhine-Neckar (until May 20, 2003 the Lower Neckar region and until December 31, 2005 the Rhine-Neckar-Odenwald region ).

Geographical location

The community is a state-approved resort and is located directly on the Neckar and on the Burgenstrasse between Heidelberg and Heilbronn . The municipality is located in the Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park between 129 and 380 meters above sea level.

Community structure

The former municipality of Guttenbach belongs to the municipality of Neckargerach . The village Guttenbach on the left side of the Neckar belongs to the former municipality of Guttenbach. The village of Neckargerach, the hamlet of Lauerskreuz about two kilometers north of it and the houses of Läufertsmühle and barrage belong to the municipality of Neckargerach within the borders of December 30, 1972 .

history

Neckargerach was first mentioned in 976 as Geraha , which was a common name for a bubbling body of water and also referred to the place and the body of water flowing through it. Over the centuries the place was called Gerach , until around 1700 the name Neckargerach became common to delimit places of the same name . The Gerach brook was renamed Seebach in 1676 . The place was a settlement of fishermen and boatmen.

In 1939 there were 1499 inhabitants.
Subcamp of the Natzweiler-Struthof: In World War II there were Neckargerach a subcamp of the concentration camp Neckarelz , in the 900 concentration camp prisoners Forced labor during tunnel construction in Obrigheim and in the production of aircraft engines in the Daimler-Benz -Werken do had. From 1944 Neckargerach was the location for a so-called "sick camp" by the SS, from which 120 patients were transferred to Vaihingen an der Enz in November . The camp itself was "evacuated" in March 1945. The “death march” to Waldenburg and from there by freight wagons to the Dachau concentration camp cost the lives of around 600 prisoners. Those unable to walk came by freight train in April 1945 to Osterburken , where most of them were liberated alive. During an Allied air raid on March 22, 1945 on the embankment of the Neckar valley line, hundreds of bombs fell on the small town. Over 200 residents died, including a few soldiers (guards) and concentration camp prisoners. At the end of 1945 there were 1,305 inhabitants.

Guttenbach was incorporated on December 31, 1972.

Norman Link has been the mayor of Neckargerach since March 2010. He was elected on February 21, 2010 in the second ballot with a turnout of 73.8 percent with 54.14 percent of the valid votes cast. Since 2013 Link is in personal union simultaneously honorary mayor of the neighboring village of Zwingenberg .

  • The ruins of Minneburg , which was expanded to its present size in the 16th century and fell into disrepair since the 17th century, stands high above Neckargerach on the other side of the Neckar in the Neckarkatzenbach district and is closely linked to the history of the Guttenbach district through the rights of its owners. Due to its dominant location, the Minneburg is a landmark of Neckargerach.
  • The Catholic Church of St. Afra is located on a hill in the village together with the rectory, which was renovated in 1828. The older parts of the church building were built in 1848 in place of an older church. In 1970 the church was expanded to include an extension and a second tower. The baroque high altar comes from the Capuchin Church in Mannheim, which was demolished in 1839 . It was designed by Lorenzo Quaglio around 1760, bears statues of St. Roch and St. Sebastian, created by Johann Matthäus van den Branden , as well as an altarpiece depicting St. Francis of Assisi, painted by Francesco Bernardini .
  • The Evangelical Church was built from 1729 to 1734. After severe damage in World War II, the building was restored.
  • The town hall was built in 1925 on the site of a previous building from 1513, expanded in 1965 and 1980 and extensively renovated in 2003/04. A war memorial has been erected by the town hall. Not far from the town hall, in Hauptstrasse, there is also the birthplace of Friedrich Ebert's mother, indicated by a plaque on the building .
  • At the location of the former camp entrance on the road towards Waldbrunn , a memorial stone commemorates the concentration camp inmates of the satellite camp who were victims of forced labor .

Leisure and culture

  • Hiking trails lead u. a. through the steep Margarethenschlucht , in which the Flursbach cuts through the Gickelberg and which has been under nature protection since 1940 , as well as to the Waldsee outside the village and on to the Läufertsmühle .
  • The banks of the Neckar offer opportunities for fishing, water sports and camping and can be accessed through the promenade and the Neckar Valley Cycle Path. A " Boulodrome " was set up at the exit of the town in the direction of Zwingenberg .
  • The local museum provides information about handicrafts, agriculture, household and ship technology

The municipality is located directly on the federal highway 37 , a Neckar bridge leads to the Guttenbach district. Neckargerach is located on the Neckar Valley Railway Heidelberg - Bad Friedrichshall , which has been served every half hour by the RheinNeckar S-Bahn since 2003 . There are also bus connections to Mosbach / Eberbach .
