history

Until the 18th century

At the time of Roman rule (around 98 to 260) the municipality was in the province of Upper Germany . Remains of the Neckar-Odenwald-Limes can be seen today at Schloßau and Scheidental.

By the Benedictines - amorbach abbey in the Middle Ages clearing settlements were created in the forest area south of Amorbach. This is how the villages found their origin. From the 12th century, the places were under the Bailiwick of the Lords of Dürn and were assigned to the nearby Wildenberg Castle .

The rulership rights were acquired in 1271 by the Archbishopric of Mainz . Mudau was the main town of the Mudauer Zent . They comprised 28 villages. In 1426 Mudau was separated from the mother parish Hollerbach and became an independent church center with 13 branches. During the Peasants' War of 1525, the nearby Amorbach Monastery was looted and Wildenberg Castle destroyed. Götz von Berlichingen led the Hellen Haufen . In the Thirty Years War , different warring parties marched through Mudau and took up quarters here. In the 17th century Mudau became an important market town with several annual and cattle markets. In 1780 there were three annual markets and six cattle markets, around 1790 the number of cattle markets increased to 16.

19th century

Due to the secularization , Mudau briefly came to the Principality of Leiningen in 1803 . After its dissolution by the Rhine Federation Act , Mudau became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden only three years later . In the March Revolution of 1848, the Marienhöhe estate near Buchen and the Rentamt in Ernsttal were set on fire. The town halls were stormed. In 1849 two thirds of Mudau were destroyed by a major fire.

In 1817 Mudau had 16 cattle markets, three grocer's markets (19 March Josef, 10 August Laurentius, 19 September Michaeli) and a canvas market on 22 July.

20th and 21st centuries

In 1989 the Federation of Self-Employed People (BdS) revived the tradition of the Laurentius Market (3rd weekend in September). There has also been a farmers' market since 2006.
