St. Pancras

St. Pankratius is the third Roman Catholic parish church since Bishop Johann II von Brunn raised Mudau to a parish in 1426 . For a long time, the Mudau residents had to hike over the rugged heights to the parish church in Hollerbach , the mother church of the Odenwald , for Sunday services or the baptism of their children in wind and weather .

Today's church, built in the classicistic style in a north-south direction in 1792, had at least two much smaller predecessors made of stone in a west-east direction. The church tower is the oldest part and probably dates from the 14th century.

Oldest part of the church

The tower, probably from the 14th century, is made of solid masonry and a third floor was added in 1510. There is late-Gothic tracery in the sound windows . Height 45 meters.

First parish church

The first parish church - laid out in a west-east direction - existed until 1684. It had two galleries . The base of the baptismal font with the year 1586 is still preserved.

Second parish church

The second parish church - also in a west-east direction - existed from 1684 to 1790. The nave was moved to the right of the old church tower, to the left of the choir was the sacristy. Dimensions: 31 × 11 × 9 meters. High altar with church patron St. Pankratius, side altars with St. Laurentius and Sebastianus.

Third parish church

The third parish church - in north-south direction - was completed in 1792. Dimensions: 39.5 × 12.5 × 9.8 meters. High altar in the late Baroque style, side altars of Our Lady with the Child and St. Joseph with the Child.
