Marian column Mudau

The Mudau Marian Column , also known as the “picture”, is a baroque monument erected in 1736. The builder is the pastor of Mudau at that time, Father Honorius Schmiegd (also Schmich), Parochus in Mudach , from the Benedictine monastery in Amorbach . He was the older brother of the sculptor Georg Friedrich Schmiegd and managed the then still 13 branches (Langenelz, Unterscheidental, Oberscheidental, Reisenbach, Galmbach , Kailbach , Hesselbach , Schöllenbach , Waldauerbach, Schloßau, Neubrunn (renamed Ernsttal in 1836), Mörschenhardt and Donebach ) quite large parish of Mudau from June 29, 1728 to December 17, 1753. All parishioners helped, especially the “member of the court”, the mayor of Mudau, Valentin Ziegler. It is believed that the Marian column was built on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the Amorbach monastery (1734). The great veneration of the Mother of God in the Madonnenländchen goes back to the long membership in the diocese of Würzburg .

The inscription on the base reads:

Base inscription

The following inscription is carved on the approximately five meter high column: “You are very beautiful, my friend, and there is no stain on you. Cant. 4.5. Pray for us Sambt parishioners. "

The Mudauer valued the “picture” so highly that an annual amount was taken into the community budget for praying at the “picture”. The municipal bill from 1803 proves that the "begging bailiff" Johann Blaut for praying at the "picture"  fl. 30 kr. (one guilder 30 Kreuzer) were paid out, "which was donated by the community".

In earlier times, in the summer months, school children would gather at the picture in the evenings to pray the rosary and the English greeting ; on Sundays and public holidays the virgins sang a hymn to Mary .

In the church chronicle it is reported that during the time of National Socialism the custom of praying pictures was severely restricted. On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the erection of the “picture” in May 1936, Pastor Otto Ackermann reintroduced picture prayer against the will of the Mosbach Gestapo . The custom was abandoned in the 1960s due to heavy traffic. Only after the construction of the partial bypass Mudau and the traffic calming of the main street was the custom of praying pictures revived in 2001.

In 2005 the Marian column was extensively restored with the help of local helpers and artists. For reasons of art history, the decision was made to change the color, especially the coat of the Madonna. The gold tones should no longer be in the foreground. "As a mediator between heaven and earth, the star-crowned queen of heaven, who conquers evil, wears a blue cloak (heaven) and a brown robe (earth)". The cost of the restoration was borne by the “Mudau Community Foundation”.

The Marian column was restored again in 2019 on the initiative of the Mudau Local Authority and Tourist Office. Weather conditions had affected the monument. The extensive restoration work was carried out by a renowned restorer.

The linden tree standing behind the Marian column was taken back a little with the consent of the parish so that the monument is not damaged. The costs were raised through donations, a grant from the State Monuments Office and a not inconsiderable amount of own funds from the home and tourist association.

It was a matter of honor for the association to restart the evening lighting of the monument, much to the delight of the population.
