The old town hall is a monument in Mudau in the Odenwald in Baden . It dates from the middle of the 15th century and was built under Archbishop Dietrich Schenk von Erbach , the Elector of Mainz . In the lintel above the ogival portal you can still see the number 1434 carved into the sandstone as the year of construction and the name of the Electorate Mainz builder Bernhart (in literature: Lienhart) Hirtseller. Archbishop Berthold von Henneberg's coat of arms is embedded in the masonry at the top left . Mudau was Electorate of Mainz until it became the Principality of Leiningen in 1803 .

The building was the seat of the municipal administration until mid-1984, and in July 1984 they moved into the renovated former schoolhouse that was converted into the new town hall. The old town hall was sold to the Sparkasse Buchen-Walldürn with a purchase contract dated March 23, 1984 . They had the building thoroughly renovated and set up a branch in June 1990. Externally, the late Gothic building remained almost unchanged. Only the main door was moved for safety of the road side away to the side of the building and the roof area due to drag dormers loosened.

In the turret on the hipped roof there used to be a little silver bell that was rung by the police officer at 10 p.m. in winter and at 11 p.m. in summer. and warned the last inn guests to return home. Therefore it was also called "Lumbeglöckle". The little bell dates from 1618 and was melted down during the Second World War in 1942. A new bell was installed during the renovation of the building. Since then, the bell has been rung annually for the opening of the Laurentiusmarkt .

legend

A legend is associated with the silver bell of yore . Once a tired hiker, who had sore feet, collapsed despondently at the Steinbacher Kreuz because he believed he was lost. Once again he rose up to the cross in an Our Father. Then in the distance he heard the little silver bell on the Mudau town hall tower, and the wanderer got the strength to follow the sound and found a night's lodging in Mudau. The little silver bell thus became his savior. Since then, the bell has been rung every night at 11 p.m. so that “those who have gone astray can find their way around”.
