Dietrich (Theoderich) Schenk von Erbach (* 1390 ; † May 6, 1459 in Aschaffenburg ) was elector and archbishop of Mainz from 1434 to 1459 .

Life

He was born the son of Eberhard, the heir to Erbach . First canon in Mainz , he was elected as the new archbishop on July 6, 1434 by the Mainz cathedral chapter . Pope Eugene IV confirmed him in his office on October 20 of the same year. From 1436 to 1438 the cleric Ludwig von Ast († 1455) acted as his chancellor, whom he promoted afterwards and whose election as Bishop of Worms he enforced in 1445, which, however, led to church disputes.

In the turmoil of the Basel Council , Dietrich took a neutral stance and tried to mediate between the parties. In April 1439 he received in Mainz the legate of the rump council of Basel Jordi d'Ornós († 1452), Bishop of Vic ( Vicensis ), who was appointed in October 1440 in Basel by the antipope Felix V as " pseudocardinal ". He recommended that the German princes remain neutral. After the removal of Pope Eugene IV. Was decided in Basel in June 1439 and Felix V was installed as antipope in November, Dietrich succeeded in reaching an agreement between the princes and the emperor: Eugene IV. Became the legal Pope accepted.

Dietrich's brother was Philipp Schenk von Erbach († 1467), Benedictine abbot of the monastery White Castle (Wissembourg) in Alsace.

Funerary monument

Dietrich Schenk von Erbach found his final resting place in front of the steps of the high altar in the collegiate basilica of St. Peter and Alexander in Aschaffenburg. The Tumba set up there suffered severe damage in the Second Margravial War in 1552 during the devastation caused by the troops of Margrave Albrecht Alcibiades . It was demolished in 1607/08 as part of renovation work in the choir. As a replacement, the sculptor Hans Juncker created an epitaph for the collegiate church, for which he received a final payment of 63 guilders until July 16, 1608.
