Neunkirchen is a municipality in the Neckar-Odenwald district in Baden-Württemberg , Germany . It belongs to the European metropolitan region of Rhine-Neckar (until May 20, 2003 the Lower Neckar region and until December 31, 2005 the Rhine-Neckar-Odenwald region ).

Geographical location
The municipality of Neunkirchen is located on the southwestern edge of the Neckar-Odenwald district in the landscape of the " Little Odenwald " adjacent to the Neckar valley between 130 and 430 meters above sea level. The municipality is located in the Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park . The Schwarzbach rises not far north of the village .
Neunkirchen is about 16 km from the large district town of Mosbach , about 20 km from the large district town of Sinsheim and 35 km from Heidelberg .
Community structure
The former municipality of Neckarkatzenbach belongs to the municipality of Neunkirchen. The hamlet of Leidenharterhof belongs to Neunkirchen in the borders of 1971 (1662 inhabitants) .
history
The villages of Neunkirchen and Neckarkatzenbach emerged as clearing settlements of the diocese of Worms from the 11th century. While Neckarkatzenbach was first mentioned in a document in 1080 , Neunkirchen can only be historically grasped with the mention of its church in 1298 . In the 13th century, both villages and the neighboring castles belonged to the realm of Wimpfen .
After the end of the Hohenstaufen Empire, the castles and towns came under the control of the local servants until they finally came into the possession of the Electoral Palatinate through purchase in 1349 . The local rule over Neckarkatzenbach lay solely with the respective castle lords of the Minneburg , in Neunkirchen the lords of the Schwarzach moated castle and the Zwingenburg also owned. The portion of the Minneburger and the Zwingenberger was allodial possession , the Schwarzach portion was under the overlordship of the diocese of Worms. With the multiple changes of ownership of the castles, the associated share of Neunkirchen also changed hands. The respective lords of the Minneburg castle had the largest share in the village, probably also in particular the town center with the church, the town hall, first mentioned in 1538, and the rectory, which was occupied in 1566.
With the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 and the dissolution of the Electoral Palatinate, Neckarkatzenbach and Neunkirchen were added to the Grand Duchy of Baden .
The name Neckarkatzenbach became common in the 19th century to distinguish it from the Waldkatzenbach, which was then of the same name and not far away .
In 1939 there were 907 inhabitants in Neunkirchen and 169 in Neckarkatzenbach, at the end of 1945 there were 1079 in Neunkirchen and 192 in Neckarkatzenbach. On April 1, 1972, the previously independent municipality of Neckarkatzenbach became part of the municipality of Neunkirchen as part of the regional reform in Baden-Württemberg .
Religions
Around 54% of the population belong to the Protestant denomination , around 41% are Roman Catholic . Both denominations each maintain a parish in the village.

Together with Aglasterhausen and Schwarzach , Neunkirchen is a member of the community administration association "Kleiner Odenwald" based in Aglasterhausen.
Municipal council
The parish council typically has 10 honorary members who are elected for five years. Often the number of members increases through compensatory seats (total 2014: 11 seats). In addition, the mayor acts as the municipal council chairman with voting rights.
The Unechte Teilorteschahl guarantees the districts a fixed number of seats: Neunkirchen has at least nine councilors, and Neckarkatzenbach has at least one council.

Wolfgang Schirk was confirmed as mayor on September 14, 2008 in an unopposed election .
On September 11, 2016, Berhard Knörzer was elected as the new mayor.

In silver (white) on a green shield base a red church with a tower on the right, a red cross on the roof of the tower and on the ridge of the ship.
The " talking " coat of arms symbolizes the place name through the church.
Culture and sights
Buildings and monuments
There is a Catholic church and a Protestant church in Neunkirchen . Next to the Catholic Church there is a memorial stone from 1929 for Auguste Pattberg . The Catholic schoolhouse was built in 1842 and now houses the local history museum. The town hall was built in 1906, and the town fountain has been built into its staircase . Several historical half-timbered buildings and inns have been preserved in the village. Outside Neunkirchen are the castle ruins of Minneburg and Stolzeneck .

In Neckarkatzenbach there is also a Catholic and an Evangelical church, both located on hills above the village. The first church was planned as a pilgrimage church. Construction of the choir began in 1511. The funds for further construction should be generated by the pilgrimage. Because of the introduction of the Reformation in the Electoral Palatinate, the pilgrimage never took place and the church was not built any further. Today this is the Evangelical Church. The Catholic Church dates from 1749. The council and school house was built in 1843. In the center of the village there is a village fountain from 1598 and a war memorial. During local construction work in 1998, a medieval atonement cross was found that was set up on the village street.

Museums
The Neunkirchen local history museum in the former Catholic schoolhouse built in 1842 shows exhibits on six levels of local history with a focus on the influence of industrialization on agriculture in Baden.

The Neikercher Kerwe village church fair has been held annually in the first week of September since 1989 .

The L 633 runs through Neunkirchen and Neckarkatzenbach . The B 37 passes in the northeast in the Neckar Valley and the B 292 in the south .
Neunkirchen is part of the Rhein-Neckar transport association . There are bus routes to the surrounding towns.

Neunkirchen has its own primary school . There is also a Protestant and a Roman Catholic kindergarten .

On February 1, 2018, the Bachert bell foundry relocated from Karlsruhe to Neunkirchen.
