Höpfingen is a municipality in the Neckar-Odenwald district in Baden-Württemberg . It belongs to the European metropolitan region of Rhine-Neckar (until May 20, 2003 the Lower Neckar region and until December 31, 2005 the Rhine-Neckar-Odenwald region ). The municipality together with the neighboring communities Wallduern and Hardheim a Gemeindeverwaltungsverband .

Geographical location

The district lies on the south-east roofing of the rear Odenwald and has a share of the northern building land . The municipality is partly in the Neckartal-Odenwald nature park between 308 and 446 meters above sea level.

Community structure

The former municipality of Waldstetten belongs to the municipality of Höpfingen. Höpfingen, within the boundaries of 1970, includes the hamlet Schlempertshof, the town of Ziegelei, the sports grounds and the repatriate farms Hohle Eiche and Eckwaldsiedlung. In the municipality of Höpfingen in the territorial status of 1970 are the deserted areas Neuer Haidenhof and Nonnenklösterlein , which are only occupied by field names.

history

In a forged document from Emperor Otto III to the year 996 in the 13th century . is called Höpfingen. Apart from that, the place is mentioned in the traditional notes of the Amorbach monastery from around 1100 , as well as in a document from the Seligental monastery in 1236 .

Most of Höpfingen was a fiefdom of the Knights of Hardheim in the Middle Ages . After this knight family died out in 1607, the village was jointly administered by the Electorate of Mainz and the Duchy of Würzburg . However, this community administration soon led to a legal battle. This ended in 1656 with an arbitration ruling by the Reich Chamber of Commerce , which granted the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg the sole claim to power. After the dissolution of the ecclesiastical territories as a result of secularization and mediation through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , Höpfingen was added to the Principality of Leiningen in 1803. After its dissolution by signing the Rhine Federation Act on July 12, 1806 in Paris , the community was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Baden . In terms of church affiliation, Höpfingen moved from the diocese of Würzburg to the archdiocese of Freiburg .

Until the 1950s, the only business in the village, which was until then purely agricultural , was the Kaiser & Böhrer brickworks at the exit to Hardheim. The plant had its own siding, which was connected to the Walldürn – Hardheim railway at Höpfingen station .

During the Second World War, there was an airfield of the Wehrmacht , called " Fliegerhorst Dornberg" , on Höpfing near the Schlempertshof district and within sight of the village of Dornberg . This had a siding on the Walldürn – Hardheim railway line . It was destroyed by British and American fighter bombers in early 1945. After the war, the area was sold to a private person who, for lack of money, sold it back to the American military government in 1949. Today the area is used again for agriculture. Around 6 p.m. on Good Friday 1945, German soldiers blew up one of 4 bunkers at Schlempertshof, destroying all the ammunition and almost all the barracks so that they were unusable for the Americans.

Since 1938 the community has belonged to the Buchen district , which in 1973 became part of the new Neckar-Odenwald district .

Municipal council

The parish council normally has 14 honorary members who are elected for five years. Often the number of members increases through compensatory seats (total 2019: 14 seats; 2014: 15). In addition, the mayor acts as the municipal council chairman with voting rights.

The Unechte Teilorteschahl guarantees the districts a fixed number of seats: there are at least eleven local councils from Höpfingen and at least three from Waldstetten.

The blazon of the coat of arms reads: In silver (white) on green ground, St. Aegidius with a silver (white) alb , red choir skirt and red shoes, black stole and red-bordered silver (white) miter , in his right hand a black book, in his left a golden (yellow) crook , behind him a black doe with a black arrow in the chest.

Buildings

In the region there are many wayside shrines , crosses and chapels as well as statues of the Madonna on house facades, which gave the " Madonna Land " its name. There are also figures of saints on houses in Höpfingen.

The Catholic St. Giles Church was built between 1906 and 1908 according to plans by Ludwig Maier in the neo-Gothic style.

The St. Justinus Church in Waldstetten was built as a small baroque church in 1710 and expanded in neo- baroque style in 1874 .

The community is located on the federal highway 27 between Walldürn and Hardheim .

Höpfingen used to be on the Walldürn – Hardheim railway line , which went into operation in 1911. Höpfingen was the only stopover on the 10 km long route. Passenger traffic was discontinued in 1954 and all operations in 1999. After the Bundeswehr in Hardheim got out as the main user of the railway line, the tracks on the Höpfingen district were removed in 2004. The overgrown railway embankment, several bridge structures and the privately used former station building are reminiscent of the former railway line.

education

Höpfingen has a primary school and a Catholic kindergarten in the Höpfingen district and another in the Waldstetten district. The community library is also located in the entrance area of ​​the family pool.
