About this picture

The Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis is a district in the administrative district of Karlsruhe in the north of Baden-Württemberg . It belongs to the Rhein-Neckar Region Association and to the Rhein-Neckar Metropolitan Region GmbH , which was founded as the legal successor to "Regionalmarketing Rhein-Neckar-Dreieck GmbH". The district office is located in the large district town of Mosbach .

geography

location

The Neckar-Odenwald district has a share in three different natural areas: The low mountain range of the Odenwald , the highest elevation of which, the Katzenbuckel (626.8 m), lies on the western boundary of the district ( Waldbrunn municipality ), the building land adjoining it to the south and the Neckar valley , which geologically cuts through the western district of Heilbronn coming to the north. Shortly after leaving the district, the river continues to flow west in the direction of Heidelberg / Mannheim, where it flows into the Rhine in Mannheim .

From a geological point of view, the Odenwald does not form a unit. It is divided into the Crystalline Odenwald, also called the Vorderer Odenwald, and the Buntsandstein-Odenwald, which takes up the much larger area. The red sandstone can be found in all historical buildings from Heidelberg via Amorbach to Miltenberg . The Neckar Valley, which separates the Little Odenwald from the rest of the Odenwald, is a defining feature of the Buntsandstein Mountains.

The landscape of the building land in the southeast is characterized by shell limestone formations . Since the farmers settled there earlier, this area is less forested.

The largest occurrence of basalt can be found on Katzenbuckel. Its mountain top is a volcanic hardy , the remnant of a no longer active volcano.

Neighboring areas

The Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis borders in a clockwise direction in the northwest with the Odenwaldkreis (in Hesse ), the Miltenberg district (in Bavaria ) and the Main-Tauber-Kreis , Hohenlohekreis , Heilbronn and Rhein-Neckar-Kreis (all in Baden-Württemberg).

history

The Neckar-Odenwald district was created by the district reform in Baden-Württemberg on January 1, 1973 . At that time, most of the communities in the districts of Buchen and Mosbach were initially united under the new name of the Odenwaldkreis . Some communities of the two old districts also came to the neighboring districts of Heilbronn, Hohenlohekreis, Main-Tauber-Kreis and Rhein-Neckar-Kreis. Since there is also an Odenwaldkreis in Hesse (seat in Erbach ), it was renamed Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis on January 1, 1974 .

The local writer Hermann Eris Busse coined the name “ Madonnenländchen ” for the area between the Main , Tauber and Neckar , which is rich in wayside shrines , houses and paths . Especially the district of Buchen, formerly part of the diocese of Mainz , had become a center of Marian veneration through the Counter-Reformation .

The old districts of Buchen and Mosbach go back to the Baden district offices, which were changed several times in the course of history and were transferred to districts in 1936/39. During the district reform in the 1970s, the city of Mosbach was able to gain the seat of the new district for itself. Buchen became the second largest city in the new district.

After the community reform has been completed, the Neckar-Odenwald district still comprises 27 communities, including six cities (including Mosbach as the major district town and largest city in the district). Zwingenberg am Neckar is the smallest municipality in the Neckar-Odenwald district.
