Counties and independent cities in Baden-Württemberg

The southwest German state of Baden-Württemberg is divided into a total of 35 rural districts and nine urban districts. This list of rural and urban districts in Baden-Württemberg gives a general overview of these including their most important data. The current administrative structure of the country came about through the district reform of January 1, 1973 , in which the previous 32 rural districts and nine urban districts were restructured. 13 of the new counties were not named after their county seat.

With 35,751.36 square kilometers, the state of Baden-Württemberg is the third largest state in the Federal Republic of Germany . In terms of population, it is also in third place with 11,069,533 people. The average population density is 310 inhabitants per square kilometer, although this varies greatly in the individual districts. The population density in the state capital Stuttgart is 3062 inhabitants per square kilometer, in the Esslingen district 832 inhabitants per square kilometer and in the Main-Tauber district only 101 inhabitants per square kilometer. The most populous district is the Rhein-Neckar district with 547,625 inhabitants, the poorest in the Hohenlohe district with 112,010 inhabitants. The largest independent city is the state capital Stuttgart with 634,830 inhabitants. The largest district in terms of area is the Ortenaukreis with 1,860.81 square kilometers. The smallest district is the Tübingen district with 519.2 square kilometers .
