The state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is subdivided into a total of six districts and two independent cities . This list of the districts and independent cities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania gives a general overview of these including their most important data. The current administrative structure of the state came about through the district reform of September 4, 2011 , in which the previous twelve districts and six independent cities were restructured. What is unique is that the district of Northwest Mecklenburg has encircled the city of Wismar and made it a district town.

With an area of ​​23,212.7 square kilometers, the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is the sixth largest state in the Federal Republic of Germany . In terms of population, it is in fourteenth place with 1,608,138 people. The average population density is 69 inhabitants per square kilometer, although this can vary greatly within the individual districts. The population density in the independent city of Rostock is 1154 inhabitants per square kilometer, in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg 74 inhabitants per square kilometer and in the district of Ludwigslust-Parchim only 45 inhabitants per square kilometer. The most populous district is the Mecklenburg Lake District with 258,074 inhabitants, the poorest in the Northwest Mecklenburg district with 157,322 inhabitants. The largest independent city is Rostock with 209,191 inhabitants. The largest district in terms of area is the Mecklenburg Lake District, which is the largest district in Germany at 5,470.35 square kilometers. The smallest district is the district of Northwest Mecklenburg with 2,118.51 square kilometers.

Before the second district reform, the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was divided into twelve districts and six independent cities, four of which are now considered to be a large district city (Neubrandenburg, Greifswald, Stralsund, Wismar; see adjacent drawing).
