List of districts in Saarland
This list includes all districts of the Saarland . As a political unit, the Saarland emerged as the "Saar area" in 1920 as a result of the Treaty of Versailles . After the Second World War , the area of today's Saarland belonged to the French occupation zone until 1947. In 1947 the area became an autonomous region under the name "Saarland" within the boundaries still valid today. After a referendum in 1955, Saarland joined the Federal Republic of Germany on January 1, 1957 .
In Saarland, 986,887 people live on an area of 2569.67 square kilometers. This corresponds to a population density of 384 inhabitants per square kilometer (Ew / km²) (as of December 31, 2019). The Saarland borders on Rhineland-Palatinate as well as the European states Luxembourg and France .
