List of administrative districts and independent cities in Saxony-Anhalt
The state of Saxony-Anhalt comprises eleven districts and three independent cities . This list of rural districts and independent cities in Saxony-Anhalt provides an overview of these including their most important information. The current administrative structure has existed since the district reform of July 1, 2007 , in which the previously 21 districts were combined. Except for the city of Dessau , which was combined with the city of Roßlau (Elbe) to form the new city of Dessau-Roßlau , the independent cities remained unaffected by this district reform.
With an area of 20,452 square kilometers, the state of Saxony-Anhalt is the eighth largest state in the Federal Republic of Germany . With a population of 2,236,252 people (December 31, 2016), it ranks eleventh. The population density is 109 inhabitants per square kilometer and thus roughly corresponds to the average of the new federal states , which is well below the national average of about 228 inhabitants per square kilometer. The district with the largest area is the district of Stendal with an area of 2,423 square kilometers, the smallest area is the Burgenland district with 1,414 square kilometers. In terms of population, the Harz district is the largest district in Saxony-Anhalt with 219,643 people (December 31, 2016). The largest independent cities are Magdeburg with 238,136 and Halle (Saale) with 238,005 inhabitants. The smallest population is in the urban district of Dessau-Roßlau with 82,505 and the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel with 85,236 inhabitants.
