The district of Mansfelder Land was a district in the south of the state of Saxony-Anhalt. On July 1, 2007 it was merged with the district of Sangerhausen to form the new district of Mansfeld-Südharz as part of the district reform in Saxony-Anhalt . Neighboring districts were the Aschersleben-Staßfurt district and the Bernburg district in the north, the Saalkreis in the east, the Merseburg-Querfurt and Sangerhausen districts in the south and the Quedlinburg district in the west .

geography

The area of the district of Mansfelder Land was in the eastern Harz foreland . The district also included areas that go beyond the historic Mansfelder Land .

history

The district of Mansfelder Land was characterized by the centuries of copper mining . Around 1200, the two miners from Goslar, Nappian and Neucke, discovered deposits of copper ore near Hettstedt . This was followed by a major mining development that had a lasting impact on the region.

In 1989, with the Bernhard Koenen shafts I and II in Niederröblingen and Nienstedt and the Thomas Müntzer shaft near Sangerhausen, the last copper mining shafts in the region were shut down after copper mining had already emerged from the so-called Mansfeld Mulde (Mansfelder district) between 1960 and 1970 Land) in the Sangerhäuser Mulde ( district of Sangerhausen ). Large spoil heaps , some of which are more than 100 meters high, will continue to herald the once important importance of copper for this region.

The district of Mansfelder Land was created in the course of the district reform in Saxony-Anhalt from the two former districts of Hettstedt and Eisleben , which in turn were formed after the Second World War from the predecessor districts “ Mansfelder Gebirgskreis ” and “ Mansfelder Seekreis ”.

Historically, the name was derived from the name of the former county of Mansfeld .

The development of the County of Mansfeld can be traced back to the time of Charlemagne . According to the legend, the emperor wanted to show his appreciation to a feudal man and give him a piece of land for his service the size of which he could cultivate with a sack of grain. The feudal man cut a tiny hole in the sack and rode his horse on the crest of the Mansfeld Mulde around the area of the future county, leaving a thin trail of corn seeds. When the feudal man with the empty sack again stepped in front of the emperor, he is said to have said with a laugh: It was this man's field.

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

The district was crossed by the railway lines Magdeburg - Sangerhausen - Erfurt , Halle (Saale) - Kassel and Halle (Saale) - Halberstadt .

Furthermore, the route network of the Mansfeld Mining Railway , which runs between Benndorf and Hettstedt as the oldest operational narrow-gauge railway in Germany, was located in the then district area .

The federal highways 180 , 80 , 86 and 242 ran through the district of Mansfelder Land .
