Emergence

By the end of the 1960s, copper shale had been mined underground in the Mansfeld region for over 800 years and processed into copper . At the beginning of the 20th century, large central shafts were created in the middle of the Mansfeld Mulde . In contrast to the pointed cone heaps near Sangerhausen , the overburden created in this way was originally heaped up to form flat heaps, on which the huge pointed cone heaps were created from 1941.

Size and location

The highest "pyramid" at 153 meters is located near Lutherstadt Eisleben near Volkstedt . It was built on the former Wolf or Progress Shaft I. Its cone volume is 8.5 million cubic meters. Two more are located near Augsdorf (former Paul and Otto Brosowski shaft ) and Hübitz (former Ernst Thälmann shaft ). In 1994 young people erected a summit cross on top of the latter pyramid. The so-called pyramids are the highest elevations in the Mansfeld region outside of the Harz Mountains . The three heaps are not far from the federal highway 180 between Lutherstadt Eisleben and Hettstedt , about 40 kilometers west of Halle (Saale) .
