Volkstedt is a district of Lutherstadt Eisleben in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt . It extends four to seven kilometers north of the core city.

geography

Volkstedt lies in the hollow of the Mansfeld slate seam at a height of 159 m above sea level. The place is an elongated village . Without local greenery and forest fringes, there is little protection against wind erosion . The surrounding area is characterized by cones of debris from mining debris that can be seen from afar, of which the progress shaft heap is the largest with a height of 149 m. The prison is the main employer of the place. To the north of the village lies the Altenrode desert . The Hegegrundbach flows through Volkstedt.

history

The ending “-stedt” in the place name suggests a Thuringian origin of the place. Accordingly, it was founded in the 5th century. In a register of the tithe of the Hersfeld monastery , which was created between 881 and 899, Volkstedt is mentioned for the first time in a document as Vulchistedin im Friesenfeld, which is subject to a tithing obligation . In the Spangenberg Chronicle, "The Lords of Volckstett" are named as the first noble family. A church was consecrated in 1390. The building was replaced in 1830 by today's Church of St. Peter and Paul , with parts of the older buildings being preserved. Around the church are the tombs from the 17th and 18th centuries. 1780 there were five manors, three in Volkstedt free goods , three noble sheep farms as well as a water and a windmill. In 1906, Volkstedt began to sink the Wolfschacht in order to mine copper slate . It was put into operation in 1909 and is one of the three large shafts in the Mansfelder Mulde. In 1949 it was renamed Progress Shaft. In 1967 the plant was decommissioned. The shaft was about 600 m deep and employed up to 5,000 people. The production of tubular steel furniture began in the buildings in 1968. In 1952 the LPG Max Lademann was founded, today the Volkstedt Agricultural Cooperative . In 1942 the National Socialists set up a camp for forced laborers from Eastern Europe in Volkstedt. The correctional facility is on this site today.

On January 1, 2004 Volkstedt was incorporated into Lutherstadt Eisleben.
