Location of Wolferode in the Lutherstadt Eisleben

Wolferode is a district of Lutherstadt Eisleben in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt . It is 3 to 6 km southwest of Eisleben on the southern edge of the Mansfeld Mulde and was an independent municipality until December 31, 2004.

history

Wolferode is first mentioned in a document by the nobles von Hakeborn in 1336. The settlement probably got its name after one of its first residents, who was called Wulfo or Wolf. But it is also possible that the name can be interpreted as " clearing by the wolves" or in or on the wolf forest.

Wolferode is a clustered village . Wastes have been documented around the village : Gebhardsrode, Kunrode and Erwinsrode. They were once in the wooden stamps, on the parish fields and to the west of them.

As in many other places in the Mansfeld region , copper slate mining shaped the cultural landscape and economic structure for a long time. A unique landscape with 87 small heaps and the wooden stamps was created by the mining around Wolferode, which can be traced back to the 14th century.

Until 1847 there were two parishes. The western and older village with the church, which was mentioned for the first time in 1336, was Brandenburg-Prussian. Mainly miners lived in it. The younger, eastern village, which did not exist around 1347 but already existed in 1484, lay east of the village moat and until 1815 belonged to the Saxon office of Bornstedt .

Since 1815 Wolferode belonged to the Mansfelder Seekreis in the province of Saxony or the Eisleben district and from 1994-2007 to the Mansfelder Land district .

On January 1, 2005 Wolferode was incorporated into the Lutherstadt Eisleben.

St. Cyriacus Church

In 1336 the monks of the Wimmelburg Benedictine monastery built a church in Wolferode, which, like the monastery , was consecrated to Saint Cyriacus . The church was located in the area of today's monument square. The church tower, which has remained unchanged to this day, with its square floor plan was built from rubble stone by the monks of the monastery around 1500 and is the oldest part of today's parish church . It contains three bells. On the south side of the soundhole, a gray, slender cross and a red, compact sandstone cross on the right are walled in. The red cross is shaped like a Latin cross . The slender cross resembles a Maltese cross . A clock house shows the time in every cardinal direction; the church clock was installed in 1882 and replaced by a new tower clock in 1941. On the ground floor of the tower there is a groin vaulted tower chamber, which was originally used as a crypt .

In the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) the church and the school next to it were badly damaged.

In the years 1859–1862, today's neo-Gothic nave , which is slightly wider than the tower with its slightly indented 5/8 polygonal east end, made of red Siebigerode sandstone was built onto the tower. Your chancel stands on the foundations of the previous church. The entrance with a small vestibule is located in the south-west corner of the church, between the tower and the nave. The interior of the church is clearly structured and simple. The nave has a paneled beamed ceiling and opens with a high round arch to the groin-vaulted choir with its three pointed, high-lying windows. The two nave walls are divided by six windows of the same type each.
