The violet-brown moon spot spanner ( Selenia tetralunaria ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the spanner family (Geometridae).
features
The moths reach a wingspan of 30 to 38 millimeters. The wings are colored brown or red-brown and a little light gray from the base to over halfway and around the wing tips ( apex ). In each of these dark areas there is a white-gray spot that looks like a crescent moon . A wide, light gray band runs between the brown areas. The wing edges are slightly jagged irregularly.
The caterpillars are about 38 millimeters long. They are reddish brown or dark brown and look like a small branch with buds. These pairs of cusps are found on the fourth, fifth, seventh, and eighth segments. The third pair of breastbones sit on a bud-like thickening.
Occurrence
They occur in deciduous forests and gardens everywhere and often in Central Europe .
Way of life
In their resting position, the moths usually angle their wings at an angle. You will fly in two generations. The second generation is much lighter in color and also smaller. The caterpillars pupate either between leaves or on the ground. They hibernate like this before they hatch in spring.
nutrition
The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various plants such as B. English oak ( Quercus robur ), small-leaved linden ( Tilia cordata ), alder ( Alnus glutinosa ), European hazel ( Corylus avellana ), goat willow ( Salix caprea ) and birch ( Betula pendula ).
