Hersfeld's tithe index in a copy from the 11th century

The Hersfelder tithe directory (also: Directory Hersfelder tithe of the Fries field, ten tender to Hersfeld castles and Hersfelder, owned by the Emperor and the Duke Otto villages ) is a listing of places and castles in Gau Fries field and Hassegau from which the imperial abbey Hersfeld the church tithe received . The original record was made between 881 and 887 or between 896 and 899, but has not survived. The list is preserved in a copy from the end of the 11th century in the Hessian State Archives in Marburg .

For numerous places in southern Saxony-Anhalt and northern Thuringia , the mention is also the first mention in the written sources.

The Hersfeld tithe index is divided into four sections. Many place names are present twice or three times.

The first part was put together between 830 and 860, names a large number of localities in 239 numbers. The second part and the other parts were created during the term of office of Abbot Harderat between 880/889 and were combined with the first part and name 18 names, each of which ends in -burg. In the third part 13 localities and in the fourth part five brands and seven towns are listed.
