Hermann Großler, around 1880

Georg Paul Hermann Großesler (born April 2, 1840 in Naumburg ad Saale , † February 4, 1910 in Eisleben ) was a German teacher and historian. His greatest success was the discovery of the prince's grave near Helmsdorf near Heiligenthal . He has published over 250 writings.

Life

Childhood and youth

Hermann Großler was born in Naumburg in 1840 and attended the Domgymnasium there . From 1859 to 1863 he studied theology and philosophy at the University of Halle . First he worked as a teacher in Hamburg and Altona and thus experienced the German-Danish War of 1864 and the German War of 1866. In April 1869 he passed the higher teachers' examination in Berlin in the subjects of religion, German, history, geography, Hebrew, Greek and Latin and then completed a probationary year in Stargard in Pomerania.

With the subject " The causes of the permanence of the so-called everlasting Reichstag in Regensburg ", Großerler received his doctorate on January 14, 1870 in Jena . From 1870 to 1871 he was employed at the Luisenstädtisches Gymnasium in Berlin. At the age of 31, Großerler finally came to Eisleben. He taught German, history, religion and Hebrew for 34 years at the Royal Gymnasium , which later became the Luther Gymnasium .

The Association for History and Antiquities

The Society for History and Antiquities of the County of Mansfeld was founded in 1864 by Pastor Karl Krummhaar (1807–1881) from Helbra and grammar school professor Karl Immanuel Gerhardt (1816–1899). Larger's cooperation since 1871 (1884-1910 chairman) significantly advanced the work of the association. Thus from 1887 (until 1944) the reports of the history association were published under the title Mansfelder Blätter . These were exchanged with over 120 clubs. In return, the association received countless publications from all over the German-speaking area to further develop the library. This collection still forms the basis for the Eisleber museum library today . Today (2008) the library is maintained by the Luther Memorials Foundation based in Eisleben.

In 1883 Großerler was awarded the title of professor. Since 1892 he was deputy chairman of the historical commission for the province of Saxony (since 1900 also for the duchy of Anhalt). In 1905 he retired from school for health reasons.

The princely grave

In 1906, Großerler began excavating the Helmsdorf prince's grave , a Bronze Age burial site that was discovered during the construction of a railway line to the Paulschacht . The finds were later given to the Museum of History and Antiquities in Eisleben. This included gold jewelry weighing 177 grams and the so-called death drawer, a wooden bed-like lounger for the deceased. Following the zeitgeist of the early 20th century, the main focus of Großerler and the public was on gold jewelry. The outstanding importance of the dead drawer for Central European prehistory was only recognized much later. The famous jewelry and the chest of the dead are today (2008) in the State Museum for Prehistory in Halle an der Saale. Some finds from Großerler's excavations are exhibited today in the building of the Eisleber City Archives.

The Großlerstrasse

When Großler died in 1910, his bibliography, consisting mainly of regional historical literature, comprised 252 monographs and journal articles. Soon afterwards the city of Eisleben renamed the Grüne Gasse in his honor in Großerlerstraße.
