The State Museum of Prehistory in Halle (Saale) is the state archaeological museum of the state of Saxony-Anhalt and belongs to the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments and Archeology of Saxony-Anhalt .

As part of the archaeological preservation of monuments in Saxony-Anhalt, it houses one of the oldest, most extensive and most important archaeological collections in Germany. The extensive collection of more than 15 million finds includes numerous pieces of worldwide rank, such as the famous Nebra Sky Disc , which has been in the museum's permanent exhibition since May 23, 2008. The numerous other significant finds include the equestrian stone from Hornhausen , the family graves from Eulau and the forest elephant from Gröbern .

History of the museum

The museum was founded on October 3, 1819 by the Thuringian-Saxon Association for Research into Patriotic Antiquity and the Preservation of its Monuments in Naumburg . In 1823 the collection was moved to Halle and in 1825 the collection was housed in the old princely splendid hall of the New Residence . The Historical Commission of the Province of Saxony was founded on November 18, 1876 by resolution of the state parliament . In March 1882 the funds for the establishment of a provincial museum were approved by the state parliament. The conservator and Colonel ret. Became the first director on July 16, 1884 . D. Hans von Borries . With the decision of the Historical Commission on April 21, 1886 to provide the museum with suitable staff, the official conservation of monuments began in the province of Saxony .

The architect Wilhelm Kreis designed a building that was based on the Porta Nigra in Trier. Director Reuss and regional building officer Ruprecht provided detailed plans, the stairwell was painted by Paul Thiersch . From 1911 to 1913, the construction of the first museum building for prehistory in Germany took place on an area provided free of charge by the city of Halle, which was inaugurated on October 9, 1918. In 1921, when the Museum Association of the Province of Saxony was founded, the museum was renamed the State Institute for Prehistory . In 1932 an open-air exhibition was set up in the garden area of the museum. In 1934 it was renamed the Landesanstalt für Volkheitskunde .

The museum and the attached specialist library survived the chaos of the Second World War without significant losses, and the permanent exhibition was able to reopen as early as March 1946. In 1950 the State Museum was subordinated to the State Secretariat for Higher Education of the GDR , which later became the Ministry of Higher and Technical Education. In 1955 the first mammoth skeleton was presented in the permanent exhibition. In 1983 the museum building was listed and one year later the millionth visitor was welcomed.

After German reunification in 1990, the State Museum was initially subordinated to the Ministry of Education and Science and in 1991 to the Ministry of Culture . On October 21, 1991 the state government of Saxony-Anhalt decided to set up a state office for the preservation of monuments and to rename the museum to the state office for archaeological preservation of monuments . On April 8, 1997, it was renamed the State Office for Archeology - State Museum for Prehistory - Saxony-Anhalt . Since the formation of the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology Saxony-Anhalt on January 1, 2004, the State Museum has been one of several departments of the State Office.

The state museum, which has housed the sky disk since 2002, is a stop on the tourist road " Himmelswege " , together with the place where the sky disk was found, the Goseck circular moat , the Pommelte circular moat and the Langeneichstädt large stone grave .

Media room of the State Museum

After extensive renovation work, the museum was reopened on May 23, 2008 with the new permanent exhibition on the Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic and Early Bronze Age. In 2010, a media room with a cinema screen that seats around 40 people was put into operation. At the end of 2012, the permanent exhibition was expanded to include the Middle and Late Bronze Ages and the Early Iron Age.

Exhibitions

Permanent exhibitions

In the permanent exhibition, the exceptionally interesting archaeological finds of Saxony-Anhalt are exhibited in chronological order - from the beginning of the Stone Age to the Early Iron Age. In the following years, the permanent exhibition is gradually expanded. The chronological end point will be the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Age .

Special exhibitions

Special exhibitions are also presented in the State Museum at irregular intervals. From March 26, 2010 to January 30, 2011, the exhibition "Elephant Empire - A Fossil World in Europe" was on view. The relics of an entire lake biotope, which are around 200,000 years old and which archaeologists were able to rescue from the bucket wheel excavator in the Neumark-Nord lignite mine , were shown there.

From December 9th 2011 to August 26th 2012 the museum showed the national exhibition Pompeii, Nola , Herculaneum - Disasters on Vesuvius . This attracted around 224,000 visitors with high-ranking exhibits and a specially developed, novel concept. Among other things, the connection between the rediscovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum in the 18th century and Saxony-Anhalt as the birthplace of the reception of antiquities north of the Alps was presented. The show was then slightly modified and presented in Madrid with great success; from November 2013 to March 2014 it was shown in the art gallery of the Hypo-Kulturstiftung Munich .

From June 5, 2013 to January 19, 2014, the State Museum presented the stucco remnants recovered in 2011 from the Romanesque church in Eilenstedt ( Saxony-Anhalt ) in a small special exhibition . From November 14, 2013 to May 18, 2014, the museum presented the puzzling mass extinction of the Stone Age in Central Germany in another new special exhibition. Museum shop

In the state museum there is also a café and the museum shop of the association for the promotion of the state museum for prehistory Halle (Saale) e. V., where, in addition to publications, jewelry, watches, CDs, DVDs from the State Office and replicas of archaeological finds (e.g. the Nebra Sky Disc) are offered.

Restoration workshop

Restoration workshop

After a two-year construction period, the new restoration workshop was inaugurated on the museum courtyard in March 2008. The building with its 860 square meters of usable and work space offers all the requirements on three floors for contemporary scientific and archaeological work and for restoration under the best conditions. The building was designed by the Halle architects Dietzsch & Weber Architekten and has formal references to the Neanderthal Museum near Düsseldorf , which was completed in 1996. In Halle, however, there was no exhibition building, but a functional building with a freight elevator, exhaust air systems, high-bay warehouses, melting furnaces, laboratories and even a truck entrance.
