Thomas Weber (prehistoric)

Thomas Weber (born March 20, 1952 in Magdeburg ) is a German prehistorian and expert on the older prehistory of Central Germany , especially in the area of ​​the Paleolithic .

Scientific career

Thomas Weber grew up in Magdeburg. After graduating from high school in 1970 and completing basic military service, he studied prehistory and early history at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1972 to 1976 . His diploma thesis, completed in 1976, entitled Comparative Studies on the Ertebölle Culture - Lietzow-Buddelin, dealt with the transition from the Late Mesolithic to the Early Neolithic in the southern Baltic Sea region.

Weber has been employed at the State Museum of Prehistory, today's State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology, Saxony-Anhalt, in the field of soil monument preservation , since 1976 . Since 1985 he has been the head of the Department of Soil Monument Preservation for the Magdeburg administrative district ( Magdeburg district of the GDR until 1990 ). In 1986 he completed his dissertation at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg on the subject of the stone artifacts of Homo erectus von Bilzingsleben . In 1994 he completed his habilitation at the same university with the subject of mathematical methods in the analysis of inventories of stone artefacts and received the status of private lecturer .

Since the founding of the Archaeological Society in Saxony-Anhalt e. V. in 1991 he is its chairman. Furthermore, he has actively shaped the orientation of the AG Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archeology , which has existed since 2005 . A commemorative publication was dedicated to him on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
