The State Office for Heritage and Archeology Saxony-Anhalt is the state conservation office of Saxony-Anhalt , based in Halle (Saale) .
tasks
The tasks of the state office include a. the scientific recording, research and documentation of the cultural monuments, the keeping of the memorial registers as well as the expert opinion on monument preservation issues in approval and planning procedures. Documentation, protection and the presentation of archaeological monuments also fall within the remit of archaeological monument preservation . The building and art preservation process accompanies preservation measures on non-archaeological cultural monuments.
The State Office also maintains its own scientific specialist archives and its own specialist library.
The State Museum of Prehistory is part of the State Office.
history
The State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology was created on January 1, 2004 through the merger of the State Office for Archeology (State Museum for Prehistory) and the State Office for Monument Preservation on the basis of the law on the reorganization of the state administration of December 17, 2003. It succeeds various institutions of monument preservation. The former State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Saxony-Anhalt was created after 1990 from the Halle office of the Institute for the Preservation of Monuments of the GDR . This preceded the office of provincial curator in the province of Saxony .
The director of the state office has been the state archaeologist Harald Meller since it was founded . Ulrike Wendland was appointed state curator in 2005 . The employees include Reinhard Schmitt and, until his death, Rainer Philipp .
Library
By amalgamating the former State Offices for Monument Preservation and Archeology, the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology Saxony-Anhalt now has two spatially separate libraries, both of which are basically open to the public.
The specialist library for the preservation of monuments is, alongside the Halle University and State Library, the most important library in the field of practical preservation of monuments and in the art, building and regional history of Central Germany. The library has a stock of around 30,000 volumes.
The library in the archeology department comprises around 80,000 volumes; The focus of the collection is the prehistory and early history in Europe, especially Central Germany. However, works on non-European archeology and natural science topics are also included. It is one of the largest specialist libraries in Germany.
