Hermann Giesau

Hermann Giesau (born April 30, 1883 in Magdeburg , † November 22, 1949 in Halle ) was a German art historian and 1930–1945 Provincial Curator of the Province of Saxony .

Life

After attending secondary school in Magdeburg, the son of an engineer and factory owner studied medicine at the Universities of Leipzig and Jena and then art history in Leipzig, Strasbourg and Halle . 1910-11 he did military service as a one-year volunteer . In 1912 he received his doctorate at the University of Halle under the art historian Kurt Freyer with a thesis on the history of the early Gothic in Saxony and Thuringia.

Until 1914 Giesau was a research assistant at the German Association for Art Research in Berlin. From 1914 to 1918 he served at the front, was promoted to lieutenant and awarded the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class . From October 1918 to the end of 1919 he was a prisoner of war.

In 1920 Giesau became a research assistant at the conservator of the province of Saxony , in 1922 provincial building officer and from 1930 provincial curator . In 1927 he completed his habilitation in art history. In 1933 he was appointed associate professor . On November 15, 1933, he joined the SA , and in 1937 he was accepted into the NSDAP ( membership number 3,974,692).

Giesau had an advisory role in the selection and treatment of cultural assets that had to be specially protected by relocating or enclosing them because of the air raids in World War II . This included furnishing the Magdeburg Cathedral and the Erfurt Cathedral .

In 1945 Giesau was arrested. In 1948 he received a research contract from the state government.
