The annual journal for central German prehistory (up to volume 31, 1939 annual journal for the prehistory of the Saxon-Thuringian countries ) is an archaeological journal published by the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology Saxony-Anhalt . The magazine is mostly published once a year, but in the course of its history there have been longer or shorter intervals between two volumes.

The magazine was initially published by the Provincial Museum of the Province of Saxony in Halle (Saale) , later renamed the State Institute for Prehistory (1921), State Institute for Ethnology (1934) and finally the State Museum for Prehistory. After the foundation of the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology Saxony-Anhalt, the museum became a department of the State Office and the annual publication for Central German Prehistory was now published directly by the State Office. It was first published by Otto Hendel, Halle (Volume 1, 1902 – Volume 10, 1911), later by Gebauer-Schwetschke , Halle (Volume 11, 1925 – Volume 33, 1949), Max Niemeyer , Halle (Volume 34, 1950– Volume 47, 1963) and by the Deutscher Verlag der Wissenschaften , Berlin (Volume 48, 1964 – Volume 74, 1991). Since volume 75, 1992 it has been self-published by the State Office.

In the annual journal for Central German Prehistory, specialist articles on prehistoric and early historical as well as medieval and modern archeology are published. The focus here is on the state archeology of Saxony-Anhalt . There are also obituaries , reviews of scientific publications since 1971 and, more recently, articles from related disciplines such as natural sciences and anthropology . Before 1990, congress reports and commemorative publications were also published . Since volume 95, 2016 the journal has been subject to a peer review process .

Since volume 97, 2019, a freely accessible digital version has been published parallel to the print edition. In addition, the older volumes have been digitized gradually since 2018 in cooperation with the Heidelberg University Library.

Since 2002, the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology has been publishing a second archaeological journal called Archeology in Saxony-Anhalt together with the Archaeological Society in Saxony-Anhalt . This is aimed at both experts and interested laypeople.
